Hi All, I don't use a caravan but my Dad does, and he's in a bit of a pickle at the moment so I am posting on here because I am not sure what to do!

The situation: My father is into caravanning in a big way, and is currently on holiday in North Yorkshire with the van. Sunday night he was taken ill, and is now in hospital.  He hopes to be discharged by the weekend, but will not be fit to drive the car and caravan home.  He has been certified as medically unift to drive.  Just to complicate matters, he lives in Cornwall (eek!) which is about a 500 plus mile drive away from where he is.

He has Green Flag maximum help insurance through the Caravan Club, which promises a chauffeur to get the car, caravan and driver home if the driver is ill.  He thinks this will solve the problem, but I want to check if any other members have had experience of this service from Green Flag and how good it is.  Also how they are likely to manage the long distance, as I can't believe they try to do the whole 500 miles in one go!  I've tried ringing Green Flag to find out what might happen, but can't get past a customer services person who seems to know nothing about caravans of the cover, so thought I'd ask here first.

I'd appreciate any feedback or suggestions, as to what might happen, or what we could do.

Other info: I live about 300 miles away, have never towed a caravan and am disabled, so not a great backup option!

HELP!

If he's got Green Flag through the Caravan Club i.e. Mayday, they will certainly take the van and you father home.

We used Mayday [Green Flag] last year when I was taken ill in Yeovil. Although we only required a chauffeur instead they sent a recovery vehicle. However they got us home, 250 miles, with no problems. One thing you have to do is fax them a copy of a doctors note to verify that you are unfit to drive, but all this will be explained to you when you contact them. Due to events beyond their control, bad traffic congestion, we actually had to change transporters for the last 50 miles of the trip otherwise the original driver would have exceeded his hours by the time he got back to Somerset. The change over, at a service area, was very efficient, by the time we had returned from the toilets we were ready to roll again. Both drivers were helpful and friendly throughout. I've used Mayday twice in the last 15 years and each time have found them to be good.

  Hope this helps

  Pete.

Many thanks for the replies, this is starting to put my mind at rest.

A nurse at the hospital had told me that they wouldn't take 'ill drivers' as well as the car and caravan, and that it was a ridiculous idea!  My dad is adamant that he will be fine, and that they will take him as well, but I wanted to check that they would.  He already has the medical certificate to confirm that he is too ill to drive, so that is okay.

Apart from anything else, he does not want to be parted from his beloved caravan....

GreenFlag (Mayday) through the CC will do exactly what it says on the tin - chauffeured home - just ring and arrange the date and time.

He should be ok. My car & trailer tent were chauffered from near Rosieres, Ardeche-France to Cheltenham. We had a cycling accident (not our fault) I had major shock & both arm injuries, John had been killed.

The courier arrived within 36 hours & the car rrived home before I was fit to fly. This was in 2004-- the rules COULD have changed, but I should hope not. Good luck.

Wish your dad the best from us all. As regard to customer service from Mayday, they are second to none, you have no worries with them. I didn't realise they covered you for illness, I'll have to check my policy but have the comprehensive policy so should be covered.

I'm sure they will drive it back 500miles in one go, or they may take car on transporter, towing caravan, how they do it is up to them but that is the service your dad has paid for so thats what he will get. Green Flag are ok. They recovered my campervan once, no complaints at all.

Good luck to your dad, worry about him, not his car/caravan.

Thank you so much to all for the replies, you have really set my mind at rest.

My Dad had to have an operation yesterday, so the car and van will probably have to be relayed home without him anyway - he will be transferred hospital to hospital by the sound of it.  It's one less worry to consider if the Mayday service will be okay.

Thank you again.

When you phone them tell them he has mayday through the caravan club as if you just say green flag they cant trace you (I had this problem when stranded at the VFestival at Staffs) They couldnt trace my membership through the account number but when I said it was Mayday through the caravan club I was sorted out really quickly. They are great and your father will get home no problems!! Hope he recovers soon.
