Perhaps it is the water that is better away. Try making a brew with bottled water (just to see)...this could be the difference.

I can see where you are coming from here. The fact is that a Gas kettle can actually boil the water better than an electric kettle as it doesn't switch off at the point of boiling. So you are more likely to  get a better tasting cuppa from a Gas kettle, providing you let it boil for that extra few seconds. Remember also that different areas have harder water than other areas so this can also have an effect on the taste. As Ulti-Mates suggests you can always use bottled water to check the difference.

I would agree re the boilng point. I was taught to make tea properly you have to pour boiling water over the tea(teabags). The modern electric kettles tend to switch off as they reach the boil and often it is a minute or two later that the water is used to start the infusion process> We are all electric at home and love our cuppas in the caravan made on the gas cooker. I have also been known to use a single burner to boil the kettle in the house, and yes there was and is a difference.

What really gets me is the folks who put the suger, milk and teabag into a cup and then add the water, I can always tell when its been done this way as the tea is not as good IMHO. Boiling water onto teabag and then wait a minute to brew and then add the milk and sugar. Thats the way ny grandad taught me, oh and if you use a teapot warm it first, amazing the difference that makes!

Hmm, all this talk of tea has made me thirsty, better go an boil the water! [:o)]

I think it has to be the gas ring letting the water go over boiling point. We use a cast iron cooker & a proper kettle here unless the weather is so hot we have to turn it off. When it's of we use the electric kettle we take in the caravan & it's not the same.

As it happens and primarily to save wasting money boiling more water than required, I've just bought a Tefal 'quick cup'. There on offer at Makro for £34 and that's £12 cheaper than Argos!!

It's basically a water filter jug with a built in heating element. You press a button that pumps freshly filtered water over an electric element that heats it and it's then poured straight into the cup.

Reading the instructions, it says the water is filtered as it's used so avoiding filtered water standing before it's used, it then heats the water to 95C, this it says is the ideal temperature as 'boiling' water damages the tea leaves and upsets the infusion process?!

Well whatever, the resulting taste from Severn Trent tap water is better than filter jug + separate kettle, it's also hotter to the taste than our kettle boiled water?

I've also been advised to try bottled water, apparently the supermarkets are in the middle of a water price war and 2lt is around 12p so I might try that as well?!

I'm confused - easy to do I know  - but how can gas get water above boiling point - surely it turns to steam until that cools again then it turns back to water and so reduces the temperature of the water it falls back into.  I always thought like Gary has said that boiling water can spoil the taste of some teas - it certainly does spoil decent coffee.

Stands back and winces at responses.....................

I think it depends where you go camping.  The water where I live is 'soft' water, so makes a lovely cuppa.  Most of the campsites I have been to recently have 'hard' water, which tastes awful.

I don't think it's anything to do with electric or gas.  Boiling is boiling.

I was always told to take pot to kettle and use boiling water for tea, but let it boil and cool a little for coffee. As for gas v electric I think it could be the "away and relaxing" feeling. I always think tea tastes different (better) when served with a nice full english when away.
