IMHO,no that is not enough to buy a DECENT van.The 1st thing is to make sure your car is capable of towing a caravan. Then a good point is to think about your needs and what layout you want.I think the most important thing to look for in any pre-owned van is the dreaded DAMP!! I really think you need to up your budgit a bit.For that amount you are looking at an older van,and the problem with that is DAMP.

If you were very lucky you could get an old van that has no damp and has been well looked after for that price, but there are less and less on the market - especially at the moment as lots of people are buying in that price bracket (or seem to be on ebay). Check every inch of the van inside and out for damp using a damp meter, do you have any friends with a van who can help you check a potential purchase out?

At that figure you are looking at an early 90s van. There are plenty of well cared for dry ones about, it's just a question of avoiding the sponges.

Although a 4 berth would give you more beds, consider a 2 berth with a large front bed which can easily sleep two little ones and an adult - this would probably give you better/bigger kitchen and/or washroom facilities.

I do know of a 2 berth for sale in South Wales at £1,500 which I know has been well cared for, if you are interested please contact me via the Webmaster and I will put you in touch with the sellers. (Click on the contact us button in the top right corner of this page).

Yes IMHO you can buy a decent caravan in that price bracket. You need one that has been cherished. As stated above watch for damp but you can get damp in a year old caravan costing many thousands. My own last caravan was a swift it had a little damp, was repaired, and I later sold it in part exchange to a dealer and they sold it for £1300.00 within a week.

it depends on your definition of decent,a few years ago we bought a van for just under £1500 it was a 1989 Avondale Perle 5 berth,We kept her for over 3 years and enjoyed many comfortable holidays in her we sold her then for a £1000,there was some repairs done by friends of ours, but overall cost of maintaining the caravan was maximum £400 for the duration we had her :)

last year we spent £335.55p on a 1983 Sprite compact pop-up caravan that included 2 awnings 1 full and one porch plus all the accessories,We have spent £50 on maintanence but have already enjoyed over 15 nights away in her and its perfect.

If by 'decent' caravan you mean spending upwards of £8000 or £9000 I'd recommend that you use any high street bank's loan calculator and see how much you would have to pay a month, unless of course your mattress is stuffed with £20's

so £1500 in my opinion is good money for a decent van :) it won't be perfect but better than having a second mortgage

Hi Eleanor.

We are selling our 5 berth Elddis Tornado 5 berth caravan (see for sale ads 21 may)

The parallel seating at the front converts into a double bed and the l shaped seating at the back converts into another double bed, there is also a single bunk that fits at the back.

The van is in immaculate condition. The only problem is that we live in the Lakes.

If you are interested you could view while enjoying  a weekend in the Lake District!!

Kind regards

Kate

We bought our 'van for £1250 - YES, shes 21, YES, she has issues, but we have family who will help us deal with these, so it's not an unrealistic price IF you are prepared to do the work that crops up

Bringing up baby to be a seasoned caravanner - we bought one to holiday cheaply - working well so far - & caravanners are lovely - helped us on our virgin voyage & our awning!!!

You can get a bargain for that price but you need to have a few diy skills as it will probabley need a bit of cleaning up. Its possibly the wrong time of yr tho, October/November is a better time for bargains & it will be easier to see if the caravan is damp when the weather is cold & damp.

Damp is going to be your biggest problem in caravans in this price range imho.

This is the price you should be looking at as a starter, I payed under this for our 1990 swift and have had it for three years. Just bought a newer 2006 Elddis as after the three year we decided we like caravan Holidays I have had to do some repairs but nothing too expensive or difficult just time consuming.
Just get someone to check it out if you do not know what to look for.

Well that all depends on several things:

1. How much do you know about caravan's?
2. How far you're prepared to travel to view vans?
3. How much of a rush you're in?
4. How many trips do you intend to get out of it?

To be truthfully honest, for a restricted budget like that my best advice would be to buy a large Tent and get an electric hook-up and all the facilities that go with it; grill. fridge, decent beds etc etc.

I know that it's not a caravan, but most caravans in that price range need a heck of lot of loving..!

Good luck.

YES, It is enough so long as your not bothered with keeping up with the Jones'.

We had an excellent German Burstner for £800. 1985 Totally dry, (properly built, the makers said sealed for life and I would agree, you could even walk on the roof! Dont try that with a modern van), and quite well fitted, dated yes but actually looked ok.

It did have just cold water system, a shower (you put water from kettle into the tank) toilet 5 berths loads of power points, excellent cupboards etc. You can upgrade these old-uns to hot water but I wouldnt bother as most sites now have excellent wash rooms and washing-up areas.

The main problem with old vans, (forget the damp for a mo), is brittle plastics, you'll find averything snaps and cracks on an old model.

Another option, why not find a vintage caravan that has been restored, that way you'll still have Kudos and you'll have fun at the same time.

Good luck

By the way, time your purchase well, if you buy just before bank hols/ Easter/ summer etc you'll normally pay more due to demand, especially this year!

We bought a 1992 ABI Dawnstar Prestige with everything (and I mean everthing!) apart from bedding included. The guy we bought it off was a coach-builder, had owned for twenty years and promised it was dry, I'd never heard of a damp meter. We've used it for several weekends already and set off next weekend for a fortnights touring. If we enjoy ourselves as much as we think we will then maybe we would go for a new model at the end of the year.

The caravan cost us £1500 and we found it on EBay....lifes good.

Andy.

We bought a 1991 Swift Challenger 5 berth off ebay a few weeks ago....a bit more at £2k but with awning, wheelclamp, stabiliser, freah/waste water, spare wheel etc and EVERYTHING we need to just go away. Its our first van just to try out. Previous owners were only the second and had kept it for years.

I'm not bothered what anyone else thinks, we're really enjoying it, had it serviced and checked over and its very dry for its age so you can get something good and usable in that price bracket.

Treating it to an overseal next week (£120) to keep the dreaded damp at bay.

Yes you can find bargins as long as your careful, if you go to view any, where they have got the gas heating on just to show you it works before you go in it forget it - it will have really bad damp that you can smell when the van is cold. They can show that things work and how easy they are to light etc when you are there, common places to check are top of front lockers, main front/rear window surround and under the bunks at front/rear corners, if damp is getting in the wallboard covering will have a rippling effectand the wall will flex very easily rather than feeling firm.Sounds stupid but if poss check the surround of the roof lights on the outside as this is another area water seeps in if the sealent is old and cracked but is easy enough to repair/reseal.Ask what repairs if any they have done.
Good vans can be found if you look and check them out proper, I got my daughter a nice 1990 elddis huricane 2 berth, with no damp off ebay for £750 but it was over the winter time,as that is the best time to be able to check for smells and damp when the van is 'layed up'

2 or 4 berth. good 4 berth will be harder to find than a good 2 berth, if it was me i would go for a 2 berth with an awning/decent porch awning. The reason being is that the kids will love to sleep in the awning either in an innertent for the awning, or awning annex if you get one or even just buy one of those supermarket 2/3man tents for using in the awning, as they get older if they still come away with you they would want their own space anyway, because as kids get to the early teen years they stop being up with the larks and tend to want to stay in bed till dinner. with them in the awning leaves you free to get up make a drink etc without disturbing them, and there is nothing to stop all of you sharing the big bed in the van if the weather is really bad.
