Discover Leisure said it was closing its branches in Orpington, Herne Bay, Portsmouth and Evesham on Thursday, after having closed its Carlisle, Wrexham and Warrington branches earlier. This comment from their report was dated 7th May. Just phoned the Portsmouth branch and it has gone. Bought our van from there so we have now got a servicing problem.
Looking at their accounts it looks like the end to me.

I bought my first second hand van from Discover Cannock last month so i am understandably nervous regarding warranty. I called them and they explained that as my warranty is an AA backed warranty it is covered by the AA and as such AA will honour any claims within the period of cover. I spoke to the AA warranty claims person (0845 4747425) and he confirmed that any claim would be through them and a local authorised (non Discover) dealer can be used providing the AA agree to the work being carried out by them. So that sounds a little more promising from a warranty poin of view. I was also told that there will be 5 larger Discover stores staying open and the smaller ones (including Cannock) are gone.
Hope this is helpful to anyone in a similar position to me.
They've been promising certain branches will stay open for months then end up closing them, I reckon they want to make a few last sales before they all go. Our local one at Cannock shut yesterday despite being told it would be safe as has no local competition.
Just been reading the Discover Groups financial report.
In brief it says the reason for their problems are that orders for new tourers and general sales are down some 20% on last year. (no mention of poor management!)
How many of us have read that sales of tents and tourers have been the highest for years.
Just what are we supposed to believe?

The problem with the Discover Group was that they got to big to quickly. Expansion fueled by debt is a dangerous game to play, even more so when you are expanding a relativly new brand and product.
The same family, although seperate siblings, were also behind the Dixon Car Dealership network that also expanded very quickly and also went down the pan.
It's a real pity for all those that have lost their jobs and also for those that may have paid deposits and not yet received the goods. During these difficult financial times if I were to be making any big-ticket purchases then I would be buying them on credit, you can always pay the credit off once you have taken possesion of the goods.
And as for all those worried about Servicing, moving to an NCC Approved Mobile workshop will probably be the best decision that you ever make.
So those of us in the South who originally had good dealers until they took them over have been stuffed. We had Mendip and Hants and Dorset who were both good dealerships. Thank you very much Discover. I wouldn't trust them one inch regarding the others either.
A suggestion for your servicing needs if it helps. Tilshead caravans at Salisbury - I have just bought a van from them and I am impressed by the service (so far). They are a family concern (dad and 2 sons I think) and are a Swift dealer. They are on the A30 just the other side of Stockbridge. May be worth giving them a shout - I was talking to them about Discover and servicing and they told me that they are happy to service vans brought from other dealerships.
Of course the other one is Michael Jordans at Guildford. I have also had two vans from them but if I were to be honest although I have never had a problem with Jordans I did prefer Tilshead.
