Does anyone else female wise tow a 6 berth and manage ok.   Hubby working lots of weekends this year and wanting to go it alone with the kids rather than us all being stuck at home while he works.

Not towed alone yet so wondering if others manage it as the van is 26" length in total and a bit daunting.

No motor mover on the van so that's my main issue, ie the reversing on site if needed and hooking up with no one to guide.

I've towed solo for about 10 years with very few problems if I need help I just ask but most of the time i'm ok last year I needed help to push the van back but only because the road wasnt wide enough to manouvre it the warden and another man helped, as for hooking up I now find it easier to do on my own as I have my own way of doing it and know roughly where the centre of the van is don't worry just go for it.

There are quite a few of us who tow on our own. My van's only a 2-berth, though, with a mover on it.

My OH tows no problem, now our mover is sorted if she finishes work before me she can take the van up to the site and I can go straight from work, She has always towed as I have never been comfortable towing,
I would invest in a mover just to help with hitching up. Unless your kids are of the age where they can guide you accurately.
Go for it, like you said its better than being stuck at home alone.

I tow, have done for years, but have a mover as I'm useless at reversing and wouldnt get the van on the drive without it as I park parallel to the road.

I've been towing for years. Current van is a dinky 2 berth but we've had 4 & 5 berths in the past, although nothing quite as long as yours.

Although there is usually someone about to help you pitch when you arrive on site, I would get a mover fitted unless you are very confident in your reversing skills. That's what the blokes do.

Thanks everyone.  It's just the size of the van that puts me off.  At the moment, price for a motor mover is out of the equation, its either that or summer hols so that will have to wait until winter this year and i will have to go mover less when i go for it.

Going to try the tow this weekend on a short drive but may just push out the back seat driver on the way and let him walk home if he starts nagging ha ha.

Test this weekend and plan to go at quiet time to get used to it.    Got to do it sometime.

Us girls are going to be doing it for themselves !!!!!    Everyone here says I am nuts to try it with the van so big and no mover but if the guys can do it, why can't we.  Nervous but looking forward to it.

When you are trying to reverse on to the hitch by yourself move the car back an inch or two at a time and keep checking, it is easy like this. Much better to get in and out a few times than hit the car. Most vans will pull sideways an inch or two if you are not bang on that way, much easier that trying to move them forwards.

If you can't afford a mover, don't worry.  It really isn't necessary unless you have to park in the drive at home, or in some really tight spot.

We have a large twin axle caravan, and I've never had a motor mover. Don't need it, don't want it.  You can place the caravan where you want without it in all normal circumstances.  I have quite a bad back problem, and don't move the caravan a single inch by hand.  Nor do I get a group of helpers to do it.

It's only a question of practice.  As long as you can manage on the road, someone will always help you on site.  Really not a problem.  It will all come to you.  Just do it, and good luck!

Jim

Hi kidintow Jenhug asked me to have a chat to you,yes you can do it i had to learn to tow after my husband died or give up caravaning, and i know he wanted me to carry on.If the children are old enough to help then let them, as for towing my caravan is 24ft 6in now it was frighening a first but as you get the corners, bends passing other vehicles out the way you will start to relax and enjoy the experiance

Now as for site i can reverse the caravan but i have not had to as all the pitches i'v had i have driven on to and just straighten the van up,as i said before if the children are old enough let them help you do this it adds to the excitement for them getting it all set up.

Wishing you all the best with the towing experiance just remember to take thing wider then you do with a car let us know how you get on.Don't be afraid if i can do it anyone can and i mean that.
