some people get black bits in the flush water I never had them till this caravan but they are gone now. Some people on here think the bits are caused by aqua kem pink.
I agree with Mozann I hated the smell of top and tail and went back to pink stuff. I use elsan and never get black bits.

I would expect the black bits to be caused my not emptying the flush tank properly and allowing bacteria to grow.
Fresh tap water still contains bacteria that will grow in nice wet dark environments.

The black bits do sound like algee or something. I havent had a problem with black bits but i empty the tanks on storage. If anyone is looking for a one bottle for both tanks solution and dont like the smell of fenwicks top and tail try Elsan organic, that stuff does waste and flush tanks, and a bit better for the enviroment. I use pink/blue thetford as its always cheaper to buy the twin pack of large bottles with the toilet paper for £15

We are very new to all this, having purchased our first caravan last year. We took delivery of our second "new to us" van three weeks ago and I just love, love, LOVE it ...(I know ... calm down dear ...)
Anyway, we inherited the aforesaid "black bits" in our first van, and tried various methods of getting rid of them, without much success. It does look like some form of algae and we fill the flush tank with a new and clean cheap watering can so we knew it wasnt that. On one of our (many!) trips to local dealer shop we asked for advice, and bought a tub of special cleaner especially for this. You fill flush tank with the solution, and leave for several hours, and then flush said bits away (very satisfying!) We did have to do it twice, but it sorted the problem.
Hope this helps!

Yes it is probably fungal growth. If you look in your toilet cistern at home you sometimes see it there as the conditions are ideal for growth. At home you can also get build up under the toilet rim.
We use Elsan products after trying thetford, fenwicks and blue diamond. For us this seems to have the most pleasant lasting smell (and is very reasonable)

We used to use Thetford chemicals (pink and blue) in a Porta Potti which we bought new and within the first couple of weekends it got the dreaded black bits. When we changed to a caravan, which was far from new, we changed to Elsa pink and blue and three years later have had no sign of black bits. We will now stick to Elsan. Having spoken to other caravanners, the Thetford pink always seems to be the one people with black bits are using.

Can't fault Elsan, Thetford is awful, Fenwicks just didn't like and some of the dealers own that smell of bubblegum are a waste of time.

it is algae caused by the pink stuff, the black bits can be got rid of by filling the flush tank with a solution of milton or fendox.then change to another type of flush liquid.

We have experienced this now, our caravan was brand new and it has taken 3 years for this to ocur, and we have always used the pink flush, and always ensure it was completely emptied out after each usage, anyway Michael is right we tried putting in the Milton and we think it did the trick, we will know when we next go to use it, to see if it's back or not.
