After losing a bit of faith in my storage site recently I am thinking of bringing my caravan home. My problem is my drive is too steep to pull the caravan out by hand and I don't have enough room to tow it out.
I don't particularly want to buy a motor mover as they are expensive and take too much of my payload. Has anyone had any experience of these.
I was thinking of parking the car over the road at 90 degrees to the drive and attaching it to the towbar.

Dont bother, 5000kg double line pull = you will run out of cable after a couple of feet.

Single pull halves that amount and even a small slope will put strain on those figures. Note the figures 2500kg for rolling loads.

Been there & tried that, I bought the rolson one, Anyone want to buy it?

A proper mover will make life so much easier. Or if you really do want to try a winch buy a decent one. That will lift 2000kg or more, Not a rolling load rating.

I never mentioned the caravan weighs 1300kg max load.
I would like a mover but payload is a big issue as we have 2 big dogs in the boot so most of the stuff goes in the caravan.

Didnt need to, My grampian is 1150kg max and was not loaded fully, It struggled even with that.

The other problem is where will you attach it? Pulling it up forwards or backwards?
I used an old towball & enlarged the holes to put the hook through, Then you need extension straps or cable, The weight will soon mount up, After you have pulled it up maybe 6 feet, then stop & shorten the straps, another 6 feet and again...again...

Money wasted, for me anyway

It's a dead pull for the winch to get the van moving before it starts going up your sloping drive. Before spending your money, I'd want to go & see a demonstration.

With the cable supplied at full travel, it'll only want to be 30 feet from your caravan, how fast does it winch in? how long will it take to pull the van into its desired parking position?

I wouldn't think a mover is going to add enough weight to your outfit to make that much difference is it, I know which one I'd go for unless you're prepared to lash out on a winch powerful & fast enough with enough length of cable to do the job.

I looked at a winch to recover our van into the rear garden when i worked out how long and how thick the cable would be and the fact that i would need to run the winch for 4 mins continuous it was prohibative because a) the cost alone of the winch. b) the siting of the winch to draw the caravan in would mean un hooking and resetting the pull c) the siting of the winch where i had 12 v feed or a charger supply. The best i came up with again was 110v but the costs were horrendous.

I purchased a Purpleline enduro motor mover and it's been great, get on drive at any angle switch it on and even my missus can take it up the drive and along side the house with ease, yes it has decreased our payload but with a bit of thought we are still well inside our Max weight.

Hope this helps.

Thanks all for your replies. I think I will save up for a motor mover as this should give me greater control and hopefully be less hassle.

I like the look of the Purpleline Enduro model at £599. This seems to be fairly cheap compared to other brands. Are they any good or is it a case of you get what you pay for?

I've got a Purpleline mover and it's the dog danglies!!!! No more pushing and shoving to put the van away just apply the rollers switch it on and off you go the movement is slow and easy to control. Brilliant

My enduro managed to pull our caravan off the pitch last (summer) even though the tyres had sunk in the mud almost to the depth of the sidewall.

Guy on the pitch next to us said his mover wouldnt have managed that.

This is good feedback. Thanks all for the replies. I will need to tough it out for this season using the storage site and hopefully get the mover fitted for the start of next season.

Is it possible to DIY fit these without voiding the Bailey warranty?

I fitted mine to a Bailey and have managed to do it without drilling any holes through the floor, the only wholes I put in the van was for the master switch for the 12v supply to the mover, but this is in the battery box under the HU cable connection.

The cable clips underneath the van were secured using the existing screws.

Just a thought, but when pulling a caravan, it has wheels so although you are pulling 1300kg or whatever, it is easier. if you were pulling over a ton without wheels then yes i get the point, but i find it remarkably easy to pull my caravan by hand so the actual effort required to pull that weight must be considerably less. This could mean that the winch is more than up to the job???????

Try pushing a car up a hill from a standstill, It takes more effort to get it rolling initally. Once rolling the force required is reduced.

They are not very powerful, Compare them to the proper winches sold my machine mart and the offroading centres.
Some of those have a dead pull of 8 tons.

I think the main problem with using a winch is the speed at which it wnds back in. Throughout the manoever i would have to temporarily block the road while pulling the caravan out of the road. I would have to stand in the road and make sure no vehicles drive into the cable while the caravans inch out.
A mover would be a much safer bet.
