Our satellite just arrived, after reading about them the other night, and drinking couple of bottles of wine, we ordered the one that will work in uk and france........ITS HUGE!!! nearly bigger than our caravan, lol. OH now having a trauma trying to put it on the tripod
...well, you don't really need a large one..it all depends where you are going. The further from the UK "footprint" (transmission area) the bigger the dish requirements. Im sure there will be plenty of people who can advise you if you let them know what your intentions are....
You can pick up a standard size 2nd hand dish and LNB for about £5 to £10 at a boot sale which might do the trick..
i sufered the same problem - a 60cm dish did not sound big until it arrived through the post! Luckily it was an oval shaped one so it is only enormous from left to right - up and down it is only huge! But easy to get a good signal. Just make sure you peg the tripod down because they can blow over in strong wind, and tighten all the adjuster nuts up too otherwise is will 'spin' in the wind. You only need it to move a little and your lovely strong signal wil vanish! Guess how i know this.....
He (OH) insists nothing else will work in france (even tho hes never even used one anywhere, lol) been fiddling about all day with it, of course it wont work!!!! Also got one of those finder things so hes going to av another go tomorrow, wish we hadn't bothered now, the things you buy on line when under the influence!!! lol
We bought one from Lidl about 3 yrs ago, graet in our garden, but when we took it anywhere not great. We bought a 60cm last yr to take to France ,it was great. We were watching central news whilst cooking the dinner.Great for evenings. Not one for watching tv when on hols, but it was great for weather and news.We got all uk channels on ours! There's a good link on here about setting up.I'll see if I can find it for you.

Thought it was going to be bigger We got a 60 cm and works fine in France.
Move the dish slowly and pray, thats what i do, lol.
Throw the away they are usless just move the dish slowly and then more slowly and you will pick the signal up. we use a 60cm dish in France no problems but the first 2 times it took ages to lock on by the way you need to be able to see the signal lock on your t.v. from outside i.e. the person who is moving the dish. When you lock on make the angle with nail vanish the up and down angle so when you put the dish together again you get the up/down angle right. You will think you are doing it slow but you will find that you need to move it so slow that the signal can lock on its takes many seconds for this to happen. So rember slow then even slower. This also applies to useing it in this country.

When you get to site in France and the weather is rainy and terrinble you'll be glad you got a 60m dish because you'll be watching a nice clear picture when the chaps who got the tiny ones will be viewing a "no signal avialable" message on the screen!
Hehe setting them up when you are new to them is a bit hit n miss - but mainly miss!! I use a cheap satalite finder. It has lights an a really irritating sounder that gets louder as the signal gets stronger. The method i use is as follows:
I get the dish fixed to the tripod and the sat receiver, tv etc all set up. I connect the sat finder to the cable at the satalite dish end. Then i power up the sat receiver. Usig a cheap compass marked for astra 2 i point the dish in the rough direction. Then i make the sat finder whistle quietly. Then i slowly move the dish left and/or right until i get a strong loud whistle. Then i turn the sat finder sensitivity down a bit and move the dish up/down until the signal will get no stronger. Then left/right again just to make sure. So now i have a strong signal - but from which satalite? To establish this i switch on the tv and see if i have a picture with the receiver set on astra2 (28.2 degrees). If nothing i switch between satalites on the receiver until i find out which (wrong) one i have found! Then i try to find a signal either to the left, or the right of the one i already have. Trial and error means i eventually find the right signal (astra2). Sometimes it takes 1-2 minutes (if i get it first hit), other times 5-10 minutes (2nd, 3rd or 4th attempt lol). Once locked onto signal, tighten all your adjuster nuts, make sure the tripod is pegged down, and sit back and enjoy perfect reception for your favorite tv program!

Sorry the post is long - i hope you can understand it!
Don't forget that if your using the sky box signal test page whilst setting up the dish there's a small delay, so if your moving the dish whilst watching the screen you may go past it without realising, use a sat finder as mentioned above, much easier...as I found out!!!
now i have an old 45cm dish thats ok in UK, do I buy a 60cm for the vendee or will the 45 be ok??
