We're fairly new to caravanning and seem to have a real problem checking tyre pressures. It doesn't help that we had a leaky valve which was replaced by a friend. But since then I've used 3 different devices to check the pressure on the tyre and they're all a load of rubbish, quite frankly. The thought of driving through a petrol station with the caravan fills me with horror altho I'm tempted to try a motorway service station as I would have thought that they are more spacious (but I am just guessing). I have just bought a small tyre pressure gauge for a couple of quid from Halford but need to try that yet. I will test in on the car tyres first to see how reliable it is.
Buy the Halfords gauge on this page Click_here , 2nd one from the top , that's what i use , it's a pretty good gauge , don't worry about checking it against other pressure gauges , i've been there and done that and you'll end up going round in circles .
So simple to use. You just set the pressure that you want the tyre to be at and switch on. It automatically stops when the tyre is at the correct pressure. No fiddling about trying to read the gauge and you get an accurate pressure, unlike most 12v dial ones where the needle vibrates about so much that you have to guess at an average reading.
We have a michelin 12v pump in the garage but for the use it is it can stay there. It would be quicker with a footpump. It never seemed to latch on properly to the caravan tyre valves.

HERE 4 out of the 5 reviews condem the connector of this pump.
I use a cheap Tesco digital gauge as it copes with the 65 psi I need to check.
However the big problem I have is in finding a pump that does the job; in all cases its the valve connector that lets me down; sometimes literally!
I have a Halfords 12 volt job, its coupling is useless. I also have an AA foot pump that is a bit better but has its moments and after half killing myself for that extra 1 psi and losing 5 it not ideal.
I tried a friends Bordmam Cycle track pump recently and that was the best yet but its £50 so not yet come round to getting one.
Trouble with using garages is that by the time I get there the tyre is not cold as it should be so I have to over inflate and correct later. Okay if your nearly to your destination but not too good if your not and have to travel with possibly the wrong pressure.
i have two new digital gauges both read different by a couple of psi so i tend to stick to one.imho anything less than £10 for a digital is a waste of money.pressure loaded or empty ?? checked my tyres on empty van and again loaded and the pressure was the same.
------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.
