Did anyone else hear todays report on BBC 5 Live regarding the police blitz on caravans on the M5?
Apparently the recent rise in the number of caravans has prompted the police to run spot checks over the Bank Holiday period. The radio report was from the Worcester services where police had been patrolling the motorway and pulling in any suspect caravans. Apparently of the 30 outfits they had stopped so far that day not one had been 100% legal with issues such as over/incorrect loading, faulty lights and lack of towing mirrors most common. One unit even had the tyres on the caravan fitted inside out.
The police and Caravan Club representatives were on hand giving advice but owners had to rectify the problems before leaving the services which meant some of them having to unload items and/or unhitch and drive into Worcester to buy mirrors etc (quite right too).
Not sure if it was only a West Country/Midlands initiative or nationwide but better make sure your outfits are all fit and correct before heading off for the Bank Hols break.

"Rotational" tyres on the wrong sides of the 'van?? Wouldn't have thought that was a serious problem. Or perhaps the wheels fitted with the dished part inside to give imagined greater stability or a more sporty appearance?!!

I can understand why they have these checks, coming back form Pixie`s meet monday on the M42 we pulled along side a guy towing a van to tell him the rear van window was open a it was flapping up and down and the curtains were like flags in the wind, the side windows had brown parcel tape on them, the off side had no wheel spat, one front locker door missing, and there were 4 bikes on the roof of the old range rover tied down on a piece of ply sheet round the roof bars with what looked like plastic green washing line.my wife told him and he just put his thumb up and carried on behind us.
------------- Think this year is to follow old meet friends for 2014.
If you cant do someone a good turn, don`t do them a bad one,its nice to be nice you know, and little things mean much more later in life.

It needs to happen more often Nationwide there are far to many poorly loaded , badly matched , illegal outfits being towed on our UK roads and the Bank Holiday just brings them out in there dozens

Assymetric tyres have "Inside" and "Outside" moulded on the appropriate sidewall - they can be used on either side and swapped with freedom - usually have tread patterns to optimise the grip depending whether the tyre is loaded on the outside or inside, very relevant on bends!
Directional tyres have an arrow indicating rotational direction, can only be used on the side which gives the correct rotation. A directional tyre shouldn't be used as a spare as there's a 50:50 chance it'll be fitted the wrong way round to replace a punctured/damaged tyre. I can see the point of directional tyres for expensive track cars but on a road car I don't see the point.

Greetings,
My 'properly maintained' 2007 Challenger refused point blank to come off the driveway this afternoon using a motormover.
It was only after I had removed the offside alloy and 'persuaded' the brakes to remove themselves from the hub that I was able to get the beast out.
If thats what my 'properly maintained' van is like, Lord help those who only use their outfits once a flood (Ooops, they happen too regularly now! Should be once a tax rebate).
------------- How come when some people visit the fountain of knowledge, they only gargle!!!
