Hi , we are looking to buy a caravan to put on a seasonal pitch at our favourite local site . There are 2 for sale at the site ,which hopefully means we could keep the pitch if we buy a an already sited one.
One is a 1994 avondale pentland , which has a broken window and needs a new seal around the door ,and is priced at £1500. apparently the seal has only gone recently, and there is no damp inside.

The other is an avondale rialto 640-6 2003,said to be in excellent order throughout at £5,500.
we haven't viewed either of them internally yet, seeing the cheap one on thursday and the other in a couple of weeks time .

Big price difference , we can't decide how much we want to spend , whether to go for a cheap one and do it up , or go for the better one and hope that no work needed.
any advice or comments about these 2 vans welcomed thanks .

Thats one of my dilemmas. if we go for the cheap one , we wouldn't mind replacing it with a better one after a year , just to see if we really want to stay as seasonal caravanners and justify the ground fees .

I have been tent camping for the last couple of years , hubby hates tent, but I love it , so have been going on my own with the kids and grandchildren. We have had a seasonal pitch at this site some years ago , hubby liked caravanning but not the towing , so it could work out to suit us all.

On the other hand, if we go for the newer van it might make the experience that much more enjoyable , so that we would want to stay seasonal for many years .

wondered if anyone had any experience of either van and any points , positive or negative to look for with them.

buy a damp meter and use it in all the corners you can find, including under the beds and in the roof corners.£10 or £10,000.if its damp you will waste your money and it will smell.

Hi Michael, yes , I will get a damp meter tomorrow ,(hope our local b&q sells them ?)

Hubby will attempt small diy jobs ,like windows and door seal. I have told him all about delamination ,and how to fix it and think he would do that if neccesary but he won't even consider stripping out a van that is damp.

There's a really good place in Blaenavon for spare parts, on the way to Big Pit. I know its a bit far for you, but they have a website. They do spare parts for all sorts of caravans, new and old. Its called Caravanbreakers.

I have no idea whether £5500 is good for a 2003 but if you're not absolutely sure about whether you want to take the plunge, I'd go for the cheaper one. Maybe you can beat them down a bit (end of season isn't so good a time to sell as beginning of next) and if all else fails you won't have wasted too much money, you can still flog it on ebay!

I bought an old cheapy for our first one and after a couple of years we bought a brand new one. Personally I wouldn't spend £5500 on a van if I thought I'd upgrade in a couple of years, I'd only pay it if I thought I'd be hanging on to it for a good while.

I've been absolutely no use whatsover have I? 17

Best of luck with the decision!

Normally i'd say go for the cheapest to someone who isn't sure what layout they will need but as you've had a caravan before you will have some idea whether the layout will suit you.  Once you've seen the cheaper one you will have more of an idea whether you want that one or not.  If you are tempted to buy that one without seeing the other one then you will have made your own mind up but if once you've seen the cheaper one but still wonder whether the other one would be better then you probably don't want the cheaper one.  Have i made sense there lol

Let us know how you get on tomorrow :)

Oh I'm so indecisive . I've worn out the family talking about it , but having time to think it all over has been good , and reading up here has helped a lot too. thanks to everyone for their input .
.
right , we have been to a local dealers and have looked at some 2000 - 2003 vans with fairly similar layouts ( although the 4 berth not 6) and they look so luxurious, compared to the 94 styles.

I have looked at pics on internet of the rialto and the layout would be more than suitable for us ,bigger than we need , but we have 7 grandchildren so need room for them to tag along (definitely not all at once LOL )The bigger the better as far I'm concerned if seasonal and spending a lot of time there , be as comfortable as possible. The rialto would even be big enough to use without an awning up in early /late season when the wind is at its worst.

so we have decided not to view the cheaper one tomorrow. we have phoned the seller to let her know .

having had time to think it over properly , if we paid 1500 for the cheap one , knowing it has faults , which would cost a fair amount of time and money to put right would bring the total price up so much that it wouldn't be a bargain at all, would probably cost more than the van is worth and would end up wishing we had bought a better one . have since found out that the floor is springy, there is another window with a chunk off the bottom edge and a wardrobe door with a hole in it, and the oven door has all paint peeling off. . also the seller claimed it was a 97 and we checked the cris number and its definitely 94. she said it had a brand new awning, but the poles were in a bag which was covered in mould , at the back the van , and poles starting to corrode. (who would leave a new set of poles out in the weather, not even under the van out of the rain ? ) Ad in window said immaculate inside ?, but she also has had a dog staying in it with her , which put us off, i like dogs but wouldn't want to share a caravan with one .

Taking into account the cost of repairs, and I probably would also want to re cover upholstery and curtains to my liking, and new lino flooring as the 94 fabrics in these models do look very dated , if we decided to sell after a year we would probably end up with a big loss.

provided that the rialto is sound and damp free, I think we should go for this one , if we can secure a seasonal pitch.
even if we decide to sell after a year , we shouldn't make a huge loss .
the seller of this one is in no hurry to get rid , he is downgrading to a smaller van because the kids have grown up and keeping his seasonal pitch. I know this to be true , I have a friend who is sited there ( she is a nosey sort , knows everyone , lol) and she confirmed this, and also said its immaculate inside too.
The vans we've had in the past have been cheaper older ones , although dry and clean , nothing like as modern as this one . if this one is as we expect it be it will be the ultimate one for us and will have to last us forever, there will be no chance of upgrading to a newer one .
so we now have fingers crossed that we will be able to get a seasonal pitch and that this van will be the right one for us .
We can't view it for about 2 weeks, so hope that by then the site will know if we can have a pitch, they say they will know whats available by the beginning of october .
Although we know for certain the one thats 1500 is coming off, and another one we viewed last week is also coming off (nice clean van ,good pricew too, but not the right layout for us)the sellers both told us to say nothing to the site owners and they would just change over addresses to our address , (yeah right )the site could then say we had no contract with them and put us off !

So really we are just waiting on whether we can have a pitch .

Hi batt, I'm happy with the rialto layout , after going to the dealers I already knew I wanted long front beds to make into a large double and a side dinete, which also had a bunk above ,opposite the kitchen and an end bathroom ( saw lots like this ) so the extra fixed side bunks in rialto are a bonus .

The cheap van had the long frnt beds and side dinnete and bunks at back , which would also have been okay for us in layout

the other van I viewed last week had a middle kitchen and a bathroom and wardrobe opposite , beds each end of van with bunks above back beds which I didn't like , as it seemed too cramped and narrow in the kitchen area.

PS the swearing may come later if I can't get a pitch

The Rialto is a really popular van, not a bad size bathroom and the bunks aren't too weeny. Just make sure you check it out for damp properly.  Good to hear you seem to have come to a decision, sort of!

Where is the site you're hoping to get on? The site I was on last year (for 4 years) always has loads of room if you're stuck. Its about 5 minutes up the road from Folly Farm. Owner can be a picky pain in the arse and the leccy supply is only 6amps, but its a beautiful site with plenty of room for kids to run around or ride bikes. You can't leave the awning up though.

If you're stuck, drop me an email at my website (click on "Contact Us") and I'll give you the full details.

Hi Karen , yes we are decided now. The site is in Gower and its the only site we want to be on .

We have had a seasonal here about 10 years ago, and have been regular campers here ever since. we know a lot of the regulars too, lots of them still on seasonal from 10 yrs back.
basically if we can't get a pitch here , then we won't be getting a van, because we have no room to store it at home , and OH hates the towing , so it wouldn't get as much use, and the expense of proper storage and insurance wouldn't be justified .
Thanks for the offer though ,very kind of you . awnings can be left up on this site which is another thing OH moans about doing.
He is a right whinger now I come to think about it, LOL
