We have just started caravanning this year. Bought Lexy (lunar Lexon FB) at the beginning of June and been away for a total of 12 days (short weekends/long weekends)and love it.

Its getting a bit cold here in Scotland - it never really got that warm or dry for that matter, but we have decided to put her into hibernation for the winter unless we actually get any decent weather in October.

What I want to know is what is the essentials for winding the van down for the winter, do you take all the soft furnishings/curtains out of the van, should you buy a cover for it? I know the brake should be left off and also the cassette on the toilet should be left in the open position other than that I don't have a clue. We have put a moisture trap thingy in the van and are also going to put a couple off mouse traps in as well, advice from the caravan storage owners.

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

vangogogo - Just one question - WHY?

We bought our caravan so that we can go throughout the year. Last Xmas period we were away over new year when it was down to -10C and we loved it - our van was as warm as toast!!

We'll be away in October and December this year.

Don't Think my kids would want to caravan during the winter, but would be lovely just me and the hubby. I don't know if many sites in Scotland stay open after the end of october.

Might give it one last shot this year in October during the school holidays.

We have really enjoyed our first year with a caravan and have been away every month since January. Our kids enjoy it whatever the time of year, it is a chance to turn the telly off and plat some games that we never seem to get round to at home. we intend to go away October half term and for New Year.

How to winterise your caravan .... make sure you are using propane, throw in a couple of extra duvets and buy the aquaroll a jacket (or bring it inside overnight)!!  Other than that, carry on as normal - having mains hook-up makes winter caravanning easier - you can leave the heater on electric overnight to keep everything cosy, and not worry about how long you have the lights on.  Give winter caravanning a go, and enjoy!

We have had our van for more or less 1 yr now and thouroughly love it. Our first outing last yr was the weekend after bonfire night and then again over new yr when temps were down to -10°C, however as mentioned before the caravan was lovely and toasty. The weather was beautiful and i had never seen frost/fog/mist like it. (stayed nr to delamere forest cheshire). Our view was that we had paid alot of money for the caravan and it should be used and not stored. So far we have managed 8 trips away including main 2week holiday and still have three to go including new yr at chirk CC site. We just change the configuration in the van for wintering caravaning. i.e. 2kw oil filled radiator, cover for water conatiners, lagging for external pipes, small porch awning, wellies and warm coats, hot chocolate and left over xmas goodies for new yr. Its fun enjoy, lifes to short not too.

Happy wintering caravaning to all.

We are really looking forward to winter caravanning - been a tenter for years so it really was weather dependant but bought a wee campervan (o the joys of a heater!)Went to Pitlochry for Halloween last year and the days were beautiful and crisp but boy, did we need the heater at night!Did the same in February up at Blairgowrie - Had to sell it as it wasnt big enough and our van is now away getting leaks fixed but cant wait - we actually intend to do more winter caravanning than summer!!

Completely agree, I hate winter but love going away in the van, seems so much warmer than the house and quicker to heat up.

We go away during the winter too, but you still need to take small precautions. Drain your carver and add anti freeze to the cassette.

Horrible damage can occur to your carver, even overnight.

Thanks for your comments but I still notice that most of you caravanners seem to come from warmer England apart from Lindjemp, Blairgowrie in February thats brave. Lindjemp, where in Pitlochry were you at Halloween, we love pitlochry, we go to Faskally a lot.

My next question is when you go camping during the winter what do you do to pass the time, you can't sit in the awning or outside soaking up the sun (what sun we say in Scotland), you can't spend all your time in the caravan, there isn't much to do indoors in Scotland, so what do you do (no rude comments please). You can go walking, cycling, what else?

Went to a chalet over Christmas last year (Pitlochry) and was bored stupid, did the walking, eating and drinking (the last part was fun)- Yes I'm a Jock.
