Hi im a newbie here so be kind
So after years of tenting it ,we have inherited my uncles Bailey pageant cabriolet 91,we were going to sell her (yes its a girl but decided not too as we have a vehicle suitable for towing it,so thought hey why not try the tin top way,she is in not bad condition at all, some minor damp in the loo which OH is repairing he is a DIY guru lol.
Im so excited we are going to give it a trial this weekend and staying in a campsite we use frequently with the tent,im that excited i even slept in it two nights ago for a trial run :) and we ate our dinner in it too lol,i can't wait to be all cosy in it instead of looking out from my tent door wondering if the neighbour in the caravan is all warm and enjoying the tv lol and trying to stop the envy rising in me as they (van family) happily laugh sipping tea/coco from the cosy glow, while i sit cold damp and wet wrapped in a blanket and huggling round a tilly lamp.
Anyway i know im rambling i can't help it too excited, but my questions is there a check list of things i should know and do before we set off friday,it sounds dumb but i want to make sure im prepared and want to make our first trip a good one.Any advice would be so greatly appreciated.

Hi and welcome,as you are already seasoned campers you would have made a list of things like supplies etc,so now you need to check the van.

Check:Tyre pressures and condition, wheel studs, lights etc, take a level for pitching the van,Water & Waste containers, check you have the pipe that goes from the water container to the caravan.Make sure you have water in the water heater before you turn it on.Lots of things to remember but if you are in any dought ask someone for help onsite hope this has helped and have a good time.

Thanks so much for the help,im up on the supplies, but the general getting the van ready is quite overwealming, the towing bit isnt too worrying as i tow horses all the time, but im just concerned i make sure the van is safe and loaded correctly as ive heard some horror stories, and all things like you said about the water heater i hope i remember, ive done a look and i dont think i have the pipe for the water container,so im off to the local caravan sales/shop today for some bits and bobs, another thing the van hasnt been used for awhile(6 months) and im concerned about any old water that may still be in the taps ect,i turned the tap and a few glugs came out and then nothing so im assuming its now empty but the last drops that came out didnt smell very nice we have since run water through but can i clean these or sanitize them with somthing,as obviously i dont want to kill anyone with cholera lol.Would diluted Milton flushed through do the job or will i need to be more agressive.
So many questions i hope i dont drive you mad LOL.

Welcome to the world of tin tenting!

A coffee and a brandy when you come back late afternoon after a winter walk, and its pouring down is a delight!

A suggestion. As the van hasn't been used for some time, why not get it serviced at your local caravan dealers, that way you can be sure that things like your gas supply are working properly and are safe, and your tyres are also roadworthy, and electrics are also fine. This timke of year you can probably get it done very quicklym, and better to be safe than sorry.

Things you need to familiarise yourself with are how the fridge works - gas and electric - mains and 12volt, how the loo works, and have you got the right chemicals, how the heater works, ditto the oven/hob, water heater - is it gas and electric??

If you haven't got instructions for the various fittings - water heater etc, then look to download them from the Internet, that way if something does go wrong you can look up and maybe solve the problem.

Enjoy!

Thanks for all the helpful advise its wonderful, ive got all the manuals for all the things found them in a drawer in the van at the weekend, and am reading them as i type lol.Ive checked the pump, hubby checked the fridge and cooker and the electrics they are fine(he is a sparks so i have to take his word for it) ,got the chemicals (very helpful at caravan shop)heater works fine (yay!!!).
Im glad you bought up the servicing as i definatley want that done,it was last serviced two years ago so needs doing, after all it has to be safe, not only for us but other road users too,im going to ring around in a mo and see if i can get in in asap.
Wow so much to take in but i think it's going to be worth it...no more frizzy morning bed head full of bugs and dripping with condensation feet that never thaw out even in summer, and staring wistfully at all the tin tenters sitting in the warm and dry with that cosy light coming from within,as that will be me now,im 38 and after nearly 15 years of canvas i think i deserve it LOL.

hi murano, we're new to caravanning too and although we've only has gladys for a month we've trundled off somewhere every weekend since. we're getting nothing done round the house lol.

we got our old lady with the intention of running her for a year or so and upgrading once we knew this was for us, but be careful, these old caravans have characters all of their own and you won't want to part with her 17

this is a brilliant site for advice and you'll find all you need to know.

Welcome to the world of caravans Donna!

You sound like you are already in love with caravanning and you haven't even been away in her yet lol.  Don't forget that with your lovely cosy 'van you can go away all year round.  I love the mornings when i can sit in my bed with my morning coffee and watch the world go by.

Don'f forget to take the manuals with you as they are very helpful in telling you step by step where to put the loo flush and how to empty it lol.

Do come back and let us all know how you get on and enjoy your weekend
