We're just buying our first ever van and I've been really surprised by the responses from friends and family (none of whom have caravans).

A couple have been very positive but I can't believe how many seem actively horrified at the prospect - we've had a couple of people who looked at us blankly and then carried on talking about a different subject, never mentioning it again.

I just can't understand it - does caravanning have such a negative image? When we started camping last year, we got several 'oh, I could never do that' type responses but we're not even getting that from some people now. I feel like we've done something socially unacceptable which cannot be discussed - it's weird!

It's so bad that we've actually decided to not tell anyone else unless they specifically ask (some have noticed the new car, so we have to explain then). It's a real shame because we're really excited and want to tell people but no-one seems at all interested...they asked more questions when we first got the tent !

Anyone else experience this?

There are campers, and there are non-campers. The non-campers will just never get it - don't even bother trying to explain.

But in the way that some people think about camping, I think the same way about other hobbies. Potholing, for instance. Why do some people find it enjoyable to get filthy, cold and wet in a cramped little space where the only light comes from a tiny little torch? And potholing's even worse! 17

I keep my caravanning "secret" unless I know the person I'm talking to is at least interested. Fortunately, out of my four closest co-workers, three are campers and one used to own a canal boat, so understands the principle.

Defo the green eyed monster, people will always take the micky, but mainly cos they dont have a holiday home on wheels/extra bedroom/chill out palace.  Take nonotice and enjoy your caravan.

I would be one of them.Wouldn't be at least envious of you at all. Might say it looked nice and you enjoy the new found enjoyment and have many happy days in it.It  would be just another caravan to me.  If you had a new motorbike, well that would be certainly different.

Nelmo we know exactley what you mean .We too have just bought a caravan oh went into work on telling his boss the reply he got was "good for you cant stand caravans myself " .........We used to get it all the time with camping as well..one friend time and time again   " oh your having a roughing it holiday again couldnt stand it myself i like my luxuries "    We have lost count the amount of times people say it even the postman on seeing our trailer tent said yuck wouldnt get me in one of those .....It used to make me fed up but not any more we just laugh about it ......Its a very strange thing because i wouldnt dream of knocking anybodies holiday but somehow people think its ok to knock camping .Someone once said on a post here somewhere that he always says  " well I own my own 5 star tent with a view i can change whenever i want."   i thought that was a brilliant answer and have used it many times now ... So Nelmo take no notice just smile sweetly you know how brilliant camping is ....its them that is missing out not you17

Ive had a similar response in a way,we have been camping with a tent for years and its always been either wow how fun,or OMG!!!!!! why the hell would you want to sleep in a tent, now we have a van ive noticed that many people seem to think ive lost my marbles and are quite horrid about it,saying things like i thought you were 38 not 68!!!!! why would you want to drag that tin box behind you bla bla where are your checked blankets and your pack of wurthers, ive had one friend just be ignorant and just look in a funny way,but i do think that might be the green eyed monster, her remarks have been very cutting, however that might be because me and hubby enjoy each others company love taking our son to different places, and her and her other half never spend even a moment in the same house for five minutes...but then thats another story lol.

I would suppose that the people who turn their noses at the thought of caravanning all like a certain Mr Clarkson.

I don't want them to be envious, I want them to be vaguely interested. If they told me they were buying, for example, a speedboat, I would be interested in asking all about it, even though I have absolutely no desire to own a speedboat and know nothing about them.

...and unfortunately, I can't now afford to change my motorbike...(Suzuki V-Strom, 55k miles in 3.5 years, probably worth about 10p now) 17

I had a similar response from a work mate until I told him that his all inclusive holiday to Spain was costing £2500 ( he kept bragging about how much it cost)and my FIVE holidays would only cost me £500 and that included spending money and food I would also be in 5 different locations He is stuck in the same location for 14 nights (Yuk)
His face was a picture though when another lad came in and said thanks for the tip on that all inclusive deal I got it for £1500

I reckon it's a mix of envy and ignorance, they picture us driving at 15 mph everywhere then sitting in a cold, damp, rusty box when in fact our van is probably nicer than the house, lol, and its only since we've been towing that we've realised how many non-towers sit at 45-50mph on the motorway.

My hubby gets the p*** taken out of him at work for it and just says "how many holidays have YOU had this year??" We've only been at home 3 weekends since Easter, it beats sitting at home or trawling round the supermarkets on a weekend.

Why give a toss about what anyone else thinks. We took up caravanning about three years ago.  We absolutley love it. In fact we have just changed our 'van and can't wait to get away.  We're luckier than some in that we are semi-retired so we aim to get away for betwen 5-10 days every month or so. If you can,  try going away in January or February, hopefully you'll find it a whole different thing. We tend to keep very much to ourselve but you'll meet a lot of very nice people.

I understand what you are saying and waht I'm trying to say is I  one caravan to me is the same as the other. If a neighbour bought one of  course I would look at but with out the enthusiam they would have.

In away my clumbsy answer explains probably how some others see it.
