We have only ever had to fill up at a motorway service station where we have used the normal pumps. I think they are larger than a standard forecourt though - not sure that there would be room at some of our local petrol stations.

You use the normal pumps, but check carefully that you can get out again - choosing the pump with the straightest run-through! If necessary sit back a bit and assess the pumps before you commit yourself to one or other. We've seen several problems where people have chosen a pump with too-tight a turn to enable them to get out, and one chap caused considerable damage to the rear of his van when attempting to get out. We've also seen vans have to be reversed out - not easy in a busy motorway service area.
I've been told that the HGV pumps deliver fuel at a faster rate, which can overwhelm the relatively narrow opening of a car's fuel tank and spray diesel all over the place.
But it's not until you get a large van on the back that you realise how tight and badly laid out many fuel stations are. The worst I've see was where all the pump lanes ended with a narrow 90 degree turn in front of the pay office. It was impossible to use while towing (and the situation wasn't helped by a clutter of all kinds of tat for sale outside the pay office). Fortunately I spotted that BEFORE I reached the pumps, and was able to pull around it and go to the next station.

Many HGV pumps deliver fuel a lot faster than car pumps. The other thing as mentioned is the space to turn in and turn out of the pumps. If necessary get the passenger out to watch you and do not get hassled by the rest of the customers.

Don't always take the passengers word for it. We were filling up ot a petrol station in Luxemburg once and had to reverse. As I couldn't see how close I was to the pump at the back, I asked my wife to tell me when to stop. The first words I actually heard was... you've hit it!

The HGV bays do tend to have better access. We have a Disco, and I have found the HGV pumps serve us fine.
Dont attempt to use the HGV pumps, not only are they a high rate of delivery some are also a larger diameter.
Imagine how long it would take you to put 400 litres into the tank using a normal pump. Us lorry drivers have much better things to do than that.
I did pass comment to a guy trying to fill his escort van using one once, He told me to **** off he will fill up where he likes, I stood there laughing at him when almost as much went over the floor than into his tank.
I hope the garage sent him a cleanup bill for all the spilt fuel.

Yes you're right, the diameter of the petrol gun is larger, but, I can only speak for myself and for my car. With a Discovery, I have never had a problem, and have certainly never lost a drop - couldn't afford to, with todays prices . Would certainly not recommend it for a small vehicle, or where the opening of the petrol tank is awkward. Some vehicles have enough difficulty filling with the ordinary pumps without spilling. It's probably just a question of knowing what is possible for your vehicle.
I tend to fill up before hitching and setting off both at home and away. It just makes life that little bit easier. But if I do need to get any petrol en route, the road side stations often have better access and exits. You just have to pay more than the supermarket price.
Our Tesco is great if you have a van hitched but the other supermarket petrol stations are lousy and you would struggle to get in or out.
I used to drive a bus which had a petrol generator on board - try finding a petrol station that will accommodate a full sized bus at a petrol pump - it's a nightmare!
imagine you are driving a lorry when you want petrol and if you have enough room for the lorry then your van will go in.always fill right to the top on the car before we go.as a rule it gets us there in the uk.drive in slow so as to leave enough room to leave, you do not want be reversing with the van on.
