Hi all,

 

Hear quite a few people talking about Cadac's so I have some questions.

In the van we have the four hobs and an oven and grill, will also purchase a microwave for speed.

  • What is the fascination with a Cadac?
  • What is the model to go for?
  • Can it be hooked up to the current gas bottle in the van or is it different?

The main advantage I can see is a) the fun of cooking outside and b) no bacon smells in the fabric in the van after cooking!

 

I am a tradionalist when it comes to BBQing and dont beleive in Gas!

I kept reading about cadac's and how good they were.  When we got our new 'van we got the dealer to throw in a camping gas bbq which is very similar to the cadac.  Got to say that my dh thought it was great as he could put loads of stuff on the bbq instead of it all taking forever on our little bbq.  As its a new 'van i don't want to be frying anything on the hob and the bbq means that we can fry eggs.  So no messy splashbacks in the 'van.  We have a smaller gas bottle that we take just for the gas bbq.

We had a bbq for 8 in no time at all and i didn't need to use the 'van at all for any cooking.  Though if we had bigger chicken pieces i'd cook them in the 'van because i like to know for sure that that is cooked thoroughly.

I'll be reading the answers too, as i've thought about getting one, however, the concept of a "gas" bbq is just a step too far !!

However, going out to France in the summer, we couldn't use anything other than a gas BBQ and everybody had a cadac, what you can do with them is amazing, hence, i'm off about one again !!

The only feature it brings is the ability to cook outside be that for social or practical reasons as you identify.
    * What is the facination with a Cadac?
Nothing in particular, its just one good product amongst others. Its not in the real sense a BBQ, its an out door grill plate and roasting oven.
    * What is the model to go for?
What suites your needs and available space. Ours is the small Safari [high pressure]but there are just two of us.
    * Can it be hooked up to the current gas bottle in the van or it it different?
Yes low pressure ones can be be coupled to a van's external gas point if you have one. Our high pressure one cant but it well pre-dates us having a van with an external gas point. We simply use a Gaz 907; it has advantages in that we can site it where we want at our van or a friends but the gas is costly. Not that in the scale of things that amounts to much.

We use both the Cadac and the hob/oven depending on the weather.The Cadac does keep the van clean and the smells out.

As said it is not a BBQ and does not give you the smokey taste of a normal BBQ but we love ours and you can cook almost any thing on them.

The only thing with connecting to the van is the distance away from the van itself as there is supposed to be a limit on the length of the hose.

We have a cadac Carri chef deluxe, Got it from riversway about 3 years ago for £99 and they haven't changed much in price in that time.

I love it, does fantastic breakfasts on the flat side of the griddle pan and it so much better than getting fat all over the van.

I have a external gas point on the side of the van I just plug it into that, so it runs on normal gas.

On the downside it is quite bulky and we generally don't take it for weekends in the winter but use it all summer, and have been know to bbq whilst away in the winter on it as I love cooking outside,

We bought the Cadac Carri Chef Deluxe this summer and would recommend it.  We made full English Breakfasts on it, fantastic pancakes, omlettes, roasted beef/chicken & lamb with roast potatoes, a fantastic piece of kit in my opinion, the only thing I would say is that we bought the one with the wok type of top, but as yet have not used this, as most things I would cook on this is easily done in a wok on the hob, we mainly use with the bbq grid or the griddle, and the lid.

We love it. It's basically a large burner on legs on which you can put various griddles, grills and pots and cook outside. It's really versatile and saves the smells and the mess in the caravan. We have used it all year and always take it with us however short the stay. We love using the bbq grill and find that we eat far fewer burnt offerings than we ever did with a charcoal bbq.

We are even taking it at Christmas to cook the turkey in (just bought a lid) so that there is room in the oven in the caravan for all the trimmings ! Sooo excited !

P.S. I already had a wok and a paella pan so I use them on the pot stand. This works really well.

PPS We have the Carri Chef and attached a hose and a quick release thingy so that it plugs straight into the external bbq point.

So how do you roast in it? That must be the only thing we haven't tried, I do have a lid but generally leave it at home in the garage,

I may try a roast chicken or something while we are away at the end of the month

As a previous diehard charcoal BBQ'er who recently got a Cadac Easi Chef (about £59 from Riversway leisure) as a gift from my OH, I have to say that I'm converted.

The ease of use, quick heat up time and flexibility of cooking for kids at different times to Mums and Dads easily outweighs the loss of a 'true BBQ experience'.

We've also rediscovered the taste of good quality meat rather than overdone burnt food also cooking bacon for 4 is far easier than using the grill in 2 shifts.

Sure there's nothing you can't do with a 4-burner hob, oven, grill, microwave etc but my Mum used to say something similar about a knife...now she also uses a food processor.

Go for it.

During the summer we don't use anything else. Last new year we even cooked a xmas pud on it!

Where did this thing about maximum length of hose come from?  You can buy a 10m propane hose - so why not?  I can appreciate the potential trip hazard but how does that compare to the fire hazard?

as far as I am aware it has something to do potential loss of pressure with the gas feed to the cadac itself

This is from Calor Health and Safety

Flexible Hoses

Use only marked and certified hoses to BS3212 and which bear the year and name of the manufacturer and clips as

LPG attacks and erodes natural rubber. Keep hose lengths as short as possible and less than 2 meters in length.

All flexible hoses must be secured with proper hose clips. Make sure that the hoses are kept clear of ‘hot spots’

and inspect them from time to time. Replace any hose that shows signs of wear or damage.

The main season i mentioned it was the fact the outlet is usually positioned inside the awning rain so it will need a longer length of hose to use the Cadac or anything else outside the awning.

Got ours from Ebay LOVE IT it does keep the van cleaner, and we have the Paella pan that is a scooped pan you could do a chinese on or a curry or a stew etc, they are really easy to clean as well i think there is now a cookery book out specifically for the cadac.

what is the best way to do a full chicken on the cadac, would i need to put it in a roasting dish and then on pan stand with the lid on, or on grill bit with the lid on..any ideas or suggestions
