What do people think is the oldest you should be to buy a new caravan. If you are approaching 70 years old is this too old. Thinking that a new caravan is at £10 + you would want to use it for at least 10 years, but would you want to go caravanning at 80 years old? Opinions please.

You are never too old! Latter years (I'm 65 BTW) are for making the most of! Even if you only get a few years enjoyment out of it that is money well spent. We have just bought a new van and we did think long and hard about it, but my wife and I are very happy that we did go ahead and buy it. The only thing I would say is - make sure that your car is up to towing the van you buy. Ours is on the limit and we are now thinking about another car - so that's another 10K out of the kitty!

Didn't know there were rules about such things! As old as you like - your beneficiaries will get it. they can sell it if they don't want it.

I expect to live to about 120 so plenty of caravanning years left yet.

Has anyone noticed the secret to a long life is very big ears (just remember all of the WW1 veterans now sadly gone but one)

Never saw a dealer who insisted that you had to have both parents with you to buy a van!

I retire next year and plan to have many happy years towing it both around the UK and Europe.

I think that cost, health and fitness and the ability to drive safely should be the main contributary factors.

Certainly not age!

If it becomes too much to tow, you can always use a seasonal pitch. Lots of options available to you.

retired 2 years ago and have enjoyed the van more than ever, I intend to be the oldest caravanner ever when they deliver my telegram from the king at the caravan site I'm at for my hundreth birthday!!!

I gather they want to put retirement age up to 70 now. That puts your question into perspective, and answers it at the same time.

Interesting question and one I'll have to seriously consider in about ten year's time. The van I have now is approaching four years old - so we may or may not want to take the decision before then.

I suspect that I'll not want to tow a van when I'm 80 but probably will when I'm 70. On holiday in August this year, I came across a lady in her mid-80s at Clachtoll, Sutherland who had been coming to Clachtoll since 1933 and had towed their caravan there every summer without a break since 1953.

Who knows ...........

my mum and dad only gave up caravanning two years ago aged 86/87 they still have their van on their drive and and sit in it now and again i hope i am still " shed draggin" at that age

Well I'm 89 and my wife is 88 and we are still enjoying caravanning, mind you my mam and dad have told us to slow down.

I would say it's more about having the money to spend than your age. I bought a new one this year, so have planned my next 10 years of holidays!

If you do go ahead you will have a nice up to date all mod cons comfortable caravan to use for however long you wish and you will still be able to sell it for several thousand pounds when you decide to stop. So it's a win win situation.
