we have just returned from our week away and yet again ( this has happened on our last few trips when towing ) while towing on the motorway or other raods our jockey wheel somehow drops this is very worrying and no matter how much we tighten it, it still seems to come lose and drop down we have to then stop on the hard shoulder and re tighten it.
this has never happened on any of our other caravans.
we are due to have our first service after christmas.
has anyone else had this problem and got any ideas if there may be a fault of somekind.
Possibly the shaft of the jockey wheel is slightly too small for the holding bracket so that you are tightening the bracket to its max without clamping tighter around the shaft.
Until your service take your jockey wheel off during travel

Yea Steve, that sounds about right. Although I must say that we had a brand new Bailey that kept doing that and we tried everything. It was such a relief when we finally part exchanged it for our current Compas.
It will be interesting to know if you ever manage to find a cure. Just be careful though, one time when ours dropped down we were up Scotland and before we could manage to pull off the road it had bent our jockey wheel shaft and damaged the jockey wheel its self. Fortunately without damaging the 'A' frame.
A possible cause is that the wheel is unwinding, though the body is in place and tight! Some Williams trailers have an 'R' pin to locate the winder part to the body of the wheel to prevent this.
Best way to stop this happening is to wind the wheel fully into the body, tight, then lift the body and tighten the arm.

I have the same problem with our new Freedom. We took it back only last week for some minor alterations, told them about the jockey wheel slipping down onto the road which wasn't very good when on a motorway. They had the van four days and found nothing wrong so just told me to take it off when towing. The wheel had come down several times but the clamp was still as tight as when I clamped it up, it was also wound right up. One of the explanations was vibrations and wind especially with passing lorries could have wound the wheel down.
First its vital to know if its the jockey wheel unwinding or the clamp loosening and the whole unit dropping?
I have experience the former towing a van home for somebody else; that I fixed by putting a twisted up bungee from the winding handle to the clamp handle. He said it always happening but only told me after the event!!!
Gary's vibration with a well lubricated jockey screw was probably the underlying cause.
If it's an Alko make sure that the wheel has located in the two slots at the bottom of the jockey wheel tube before you locate it up into the A frame otherwise the wheel will wind itself down during transit.

of course we do this ,
it is not unwinding it just drops with the clamp still tightly in place.

Sorry I didn't mean to point out the obvious but was just tring to elimate possible causes. I think that millermicm possible cause could be the answer. If clamp bolt has gone as far in as it will go you may be able to pack it out with washers to take up slack.
