Some of you may have read my other posts about my back problems ad I seriously thinking of selling all camping gear and OH coming round to the idea of us buying a van. I guess this will be easier on my back than tenting. Are the beds comfy in vans? We sometimes use the inlaws MH and find their fixed bed fab. Also thinking not having to erect tent all equipment will also be alot easier with a van

I found the seat/bed in our Coachman a tad hard but that was just me I have read that a lot of people use a mattress topper on the front seats/bed and it makes a big difference

We use a topper too. Our bed is as comfortable as the one at home. Don't get a van with a side bed as you have to climb over each other. Get an island bed.

A mover for the van is a must.

We have a fixed bed - and have a memory foam topper, too - and if it's colder we also have a double duvet on top of that but under the sheet!!!!  Mr Val A has been known to have a bad back - (keeping quiet as he's fine at the moment) - especially on holiday, until we bought the foam topper.  It's very comfortable - probably better than our bed at home.

I must admit we never found the 'rearranged cushions' in our previous vans very comfortable - there always seemed to be 'seams', gaps, or lumps in all the wrong places even with the cushions turned upside down.  In those vans we did have a 'normal' foam topper but it had to be so thin to store away that it didn't really make a difference.

We've just bought a motor mover, too, but not yet fitted it.

We don't have a fixed bed either, prefer the extra living space. Still get a good nights sleep. We generally use as singles and I use a sleeping bag. OH makes up with sheet and douvet.

Echo point about getting a motor mover fitted. Also need care with full Aqua roll and toilet. If toilet doesn't come on wheels get a carrier, they are very heavy when full.

Awnings can be another issue, but perhaps easier for a seasoned tenter. I find I have to have a rest after putting up ours. Not just the streaching but the bending to peg out.

If you have a bad back you don't want a soft bed. Your spine twists in the night & vertebrae displace even more. At home you can choose your bed, with a caravan you take pot luck, the bed in it is what you get. If you can only afford an older caravan the bed, whether fixed or made up from seats may have had it, so you would need to budget several £100s to reupholster with firm foam, if buy a new caravan the bed might not be firm enough.

If you want to buy a caravan then do that but I can't see how caravanning is going to be easier on your back than tenting. Theres plenty of lifting setting up a caravan onsite.

With a tent you can sleep on the hard ground which is often better if you have back problems although it may not feel like it.

If we go down the caravan route OH will set up, do water/ loo etc. At the min I love camping just me and daughter and this is what I cant continue to do with bad back (OH hates tent camping).

I thought with a caravan OH could also leave me on site for a couple of days sometimes too.

I have a bad back and actually found the most comfortable thing to sleep on was my blow up bed when we were camping!

Now we have a van it can actually put more strain on your back setting up - once its up its ok - things to keep in mind...

1 - use power tools to lower the steadies

2 - we have a water porter and waste hog - both on wheels but the waste hog is really big and can be very heavy even to roll - we are thinking about getting a smaller version - you may have to empty it more often but its less heavy

3 - the cassette toilet (or even a porta potti) can get very heavy too - we use our water porter to carry it but you can get small trolleys for these

4 - beds - we have a double dinnette layout - as its an old van I found the back bed had been used less for sitting on and the foam is fine (actually its really comfortable for me) so I suppose thats just luck! as been said before you can always buy better foam - make sure you try the beds before you buy a van to get the feel of them and how to make them up

5 - we couldn't afford a van with a fixed bed but it would be great (hopefully when the kids are up we can just use the back dinnette as one) its also sore on the back making the beds up as you have to pull out the stays in the middle, turn all the cushions round as ours has knee rolls. We use sleeping bags as we tried a fitted sheet with a duvet but it was really too much hassle to put it on every night

6 - we dont have an awning as I dont want the hassle of putting it up or taking it down - pegging down really hurt my back when we camped

7 - I never found a completely comfy camping chair - I have a directors chair with a filled in bit at the bottom of my back which is ok for sitting outside but find the van seats very comfy and can use cushions for support.

8- we are also thinking about a motor mover cos we always seem to have to push the van just a wee bit to get it into the right position

9 - make sure your caravan step is the right height - we got a single step with our van but it was just a wee bit too low and jarred my back when I stepped out - got a wide double step and its fine now

Hope this helps!

i have a torn disc, which is very painful, and i cant do much at the moment because of it,we had a tent, but had to give that up as i cant bend,so we opted for a trailer tent,it is off the floor, and the beds are really comfy, you dont have to spend a fortune on one,we got ours for £350 and its fantastic.Mind,if money is not a problem a van would be the bees knees

As per a number of other posters, we lived permanently in our caravan for 2 1/2 years although it had a very bad back issue.  Almost crippled for awhile plus I have rheumatoid arthritis.  We have a island fixed bed similar to the design in 2kias post.  On top of the mattress we have a thick memory foam topper and now the caravan mattress is more comfortable than the one at home.

I sleep better in my caravan than I do in the bed at home.

Can't give a reason for this this but it's true.

If you're going to buy a caravan and you have a bad back an absolute must is a motor mover of the fixed variety ie Truma, Reich, Powertouch etc etc. I've had one for years and would have had to give up caravanning but for this fantastic gadget.

One of the main reasons we changed to a caravan from a trailer tent is because I used to suffer with terrible upper back and neck pain in the trailer tent. Never had a moments trouble in the caravan.
