Any tips for cooking a traditional Christmas dinner in the caravan?  Four of us are spending Christmas in our 'vans for the first time and we'd like to know what's the best type of turkey to cook in a caravan oven?  Obviously the usual 14lb bird just isn't going to fit, but should we go for a small turkey crown, escalopes or what?  All info gratefully received.  (If it all goes pear-shaped we have plan X: turkey burgers on the BBQ with sprout kebabs!)

Thanks!

What barbecue do you have? We've cooked a good sized one (think it was about 9/10 lb) on a weber barbecue by the "indirect" method. Was very tasty and juicy.

Just the basic charcoal ones I'm afraid - the chaps are traditionalists (hence the insistence on a 'proper' Christmas dinner!)  We'd probably have to fire them up on Xmas Eve in order to cook a whole turkey!

We alaways cook our turkey before we leave, as we both prefer it cold. The one time we did cook it, we used a turkey 'crown'. No waste so less space required.

Thanks for the suggestions folks, it looks as if we'll be going cold turkey (only joking - the next post is for wine to go with the meal!)  Whatever you're doing for the festive season, have a good one.

(Motley: love the outfit!)

If the weather allows barbecueing then why not make some Christmas Kebabs - pieces of turkey, sausages rolled in bacon, stuffing balls with sausage meat, and some small onions or shallots.  These would be lovely, non-traditional, and make an excellent caravan Christmas dinner without the hassle of cooking a whole turkey.  You could leave them to the chaps to cook, and russle up all the roast potatoes, vegetables and sauces without having to worry about the turkey.

Once everything was on your plate you wouldn't even know!  Oh, and it would save the amount of worktop room, or table top, that a whole turkey would take up!

Why eat an overpriced turkey at Xmas?  We are having tiger prawns with either sirloin or fillet steak for a change which will be washed washed down with a nice bottle of wine.  Turkey is a dry horrible tasting meat unless you flavour it with all sorts of things.  Even chicken tastes better.

You got it almost right.  Should that be several pints?  17

Because the thread is about turkey, that's why.

2 options i would suggest

first is the turkey crown as people suggest....although you need to consider if your oven gets hot enough in the first place....i know ours would struggle if I did a large crown.....so if you do this allow plenty of time before hand and then keep it warm under some foil whilst you finish the spuds/veg.

alternative is to cook before you go.....then slice it and chill ready to reheat on the day.

to reheat, lay out on a tray/platter (overlap slices) and put some cooked bacon rolls and stuffing and the odd sage leaf between the meat...all on the same tray (i usually use this as the serving tray also)

sprinkle a little water or stock on the turkey (dont drown it), cover with foil (shiny side down) and then put in the oven until hot.
this is the pro way and shoudnt dry it out and will include the flavour of the stuffing etc and heat the bacon rolls and stuffin.

remove the sage leaves before serving!

If the meat is not yet hot and looks to be drying out put on a little more hot stock.

make sure you heat well (circa 180-200 C) and all will be OK.

incidentally if you intend doing the latter you dont want to keep the cold meat for more than a day before re-heating.

ps...ask for an oven thermometer for xmas and this will come in handy to make sure the oven is hot enough...the themostats on caravan ovens arent renowned for their accuracy.

yum.
