OK, this is probably a stupid question, so apologies, but the biggest concern for caravanners seems to be to avoid damp getting into your van.
But, apart from the smell, what problems does it cause? Is the strength of the walls affected, does it make the caravan colder?
Most posts I've seen say that damp is normally in inaccessible places (under beds etc), so it's not an aesthetic issue. Another symptom seems to be spongy floors - is there a real danger of the floor collapsing?
Excuse my ignorance - just interested...

Damp in a caravan is the equivalent of rust in a car.
It devalues it, and if untreated will render the vehicle scrap - the cost of restoration will far outweigh the value of the unit.
So pretty serious........

I think you should look at wizards site, and see what damp is and how it spreads though a van. Then i think you will see what is wrong with damp.

Here's the link to Wizard's website. Just one look at some of the Fixed It Club links will convince you that damp is a very bad thing.

If the damp is caused by water leaking in thru failed joints in the caravan & the caravan is not repaired eventually the caravan will rot away & be worthless, wet wood that stays wet rots & eventually disintigrates. This also explains the spongy floor, spongy is stage 1, hole in floor is stage 2.
If the caravan becomes so rotten that you can't tow it to your holiday destination you will not actually be able to use it. Hence the almost fanatical desire for a dry caravan.
If you & your family enjoy a party, spilling your beer & p**sing yourself in your caravan, the inside of your caravan will be damp but this damp will dry, this is good damp. Bad damp is damp that comes in thru holes in the caravan, this damp does not dry.
I bet you're glad you asked this....before bidding on that ebay bargain.

I thought the spongy floor was attributable to delamination rather than rot. If that is the case then delamination is the layers of the floor separating rather than rotting and this can be fixed cheaply with an injection kit that hardens the floor and glues it back together again. No?

I think it can be due to either - some of the floors in the Fixed It Club caravans are definitely rotten - and I imagine some have delaminated. Both can cause sponginess of the floor.

Not only all that, but the weight of the extra water in the wood will make the van heavier to tow and upset the balance, thereby making it potentially unsafe and more likely to be the cause of an accident, even if it doesn't fall apart.
And it will not be very nice for anyone with any breathing problems to spend a night sleeping in it as it could exacerbate their illness.

it is a bailey, there will be other ways it can fall apart.
owning a caravan is a hobby itself, it is not just the holidays it is the days spent on it pottering about, resealing bits of trim, screwing bits back together, doing diy, swearing when it dont fit and now and again, stepping back with a steaming hot cup of tea in your greasy hands and thinking... my van looks braw

I know that fittings are wood but I sort of assumed that the structural parts of modern caravans weren't wood - is that not the case? Surely the Pegasus isn't the first?

No most modern caravans have wooden battens still. I am not sure about German ones or things like Eribas but the names you will be familiar with are the same old structure of yesteryear!

The hymers have an aluminium frame and the eribas a tubular steel frame, all the rest have wooden frames.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013
