Looks like the max width for caravans/trailers towed by cars-rather than commercial vehicles is increasing at the end of march to 2.55 metres-blooming heck some of these cl's are going to have to widen their gates!! http://www.dft.gov.uk/consultations/open/2009-62/

See you all soon, Bernard

Its just bringing us inline with EU construction and use regulations. I suspect it will be many years before all caravans are that wide, if ever. The current rules have no basis in common sense. It will also give manufacturers an opportunity to explore new layouts. For a lot of people it will be storage that will decide the caravan width. I was surprised when I purchased my first 2.3mts wide caravan, only 4 inches wider than the previous one but made quite a difference where I store it in the back garden!

If you want a wide caravan as soon as its legal, there are plenty of German built caravans available.

In spite of this, I think Bailey have decreased the width of the Olly (Olympus) compared with the Peggy.

I have not seen any confirmation but the consultation was much shorter than normal that suggests its a foregone conclusion as we would other wise be out of step with European rules.

Hi, on another forum (a Hobby owners one) I saw a thread about the width issue, in which someone had pasted an email they had received from the DFT regarding this matter which you may find interesting:

**********************************************************************************

Dear Mr Neaves,

Thank you for your enquiry.

The amending trailer width legislation has been drafted and assuming no final objections are raised it will come into force on the 20th April.

The Department cannot give an authoritative interpretation of the law; that is a matter for the courts.

Yours sincerely

Martin Rogers

DfT – Transport Technology and Standards

*******************************************************************************

Fingers crossed

TFW

i can hear the sound of tearing aluminium and the snapping of gateposts.
i feel there may be some gates they will not go through at that width.

I have a concrete pillar alongside my gate and had to trim that down to get my current van in.

some sites have stone pillars and need an accurate line up to get in.unless these have gone there could be a few dents, seen one that hit a hinge in a stone pillar and opened it like a sardine tin.not nice.
