Did anyone see the section on caravan theft on cars cops cameras last night (BBC1)? If you have iplayer, it's well worth watching.

I can't imagine how gutting it would be to have the cops turn up to your holiday site, check over your caravan, decide it's stolen and tow it away there and then!

Mind you, the two it happenned to had driven to a motorway services, handed over an envelope of cash, and not even got a hand written reciept!

My favourite bit was the bloke who was flying his microlight and saw his mates caravan being stolen, and followed it down the A1 until his mate caught up in his car....

Well they have to make a good story, don't they? I think anybody who is daft enough to hand over £1000s to a seller they meet up with on a motorway services deserves what they get, but even if you buy a caravan privately from the sellers house there is always a risk that the caravan could have been stolen several owners ago.

One does wonder if, that having bought an ebay or Autotrader 'bargain' at much below dealer prices the buyer knows it would be a bad idea to check the caravan with Cris & 99.9% of the time the buyer is going to get away with it. The percentage of caravans checked at random will be tiny.

The police do seem to have a habit of checking steam fairs tho so perhaps they have an idea of what they are lookin' for.

I would think taking caravan registration out of the hands of a private, profit making company & putting it in the hands of the DVLA would make the selling on of stolen 'vans more difficult particulary if they had to display their own registration plate on the back(& had a V5)as is the case with most other European countries.

I blame the idiots who buy a van at a knock down price in a layby or on ebay.

If they didn't have a market to sell on then they wouldn't steal so many. The golden rule is, if it is a bargain then it is stolen.

Nobody sells a genuine caravan at a lower than market price.

I agree with the previous posting. V5,Road fund licence and Mot's.

Happy to pay £100 to be able to use my caravan on the road.

I cant see how having a caravan registered with the dvla will solve the problem of caravan theft.Cars have always been registered with the dvla and it doesnt stop them being stolen to order. The point im trying to make is,no matter what legislation the government may introduce,we will never beat the thieves. They will always find a way around the system, either with forged documents(many cars are unwittingly sold on this way) or fake vin plates on the van. There is far too much money to be made stealing caravans for the thief to worry about if the caravans have mots or not.Ok,it might deter the average thief from doing a deal on the side of the M6 with you, but  we all know where the majority of stolen luxury vans end up and in my opinion the local constabulary seem very reluctant to go checking on those big blue and white vans of our itinerant friends anyway.

Don't disagree with you at all but it would be easier to spot stolen vans if they all had a number plate and the vin number. Then they could be matched. Still comes back the the point that if there wasn't a market then they wouldn't bother to steal.

Most people don't buy the big blue and white vans because they know there is a good chance they will go missing anyway!

I know they were really silly & naive (sp?) to hand £6k over in a layby but I still couldn't help feeling sorry for them.  The look of complete bewilderment on the guys face & his wife in tears was awful.

Our van doesn't have a tracker on it.  Can anyone point me in the best direction for info & prices?

One other question - do you all fit your wheel clamps when your on campsites?  We never have but are now thinking we should...

I certainly do and most others I see on sites do also. Check your caravan insurance, I would be very surprised if it didn't read -security devices in place at all times caravan unattended- and that includes sites.
