up until now we have avoided the credit crunch but as of next week my work is abolishing shifts for the forseeable future so I will be 42%worse off in total wage wise.add to that my mrs isnt long back from maternity leave and is basically part time at the moment,so we are going to go from being comfy to basically living hand to mouth.we have a pitch for a week booked for the school holidays in april but will probably have to cancel as the cost of the pitch, fuel, spending money etc it will be too much we think.mrs has even suggested selling the van but being honest that would tear me apart.would rather it just sat there until things picked up again.
god i hate this country at times

I can empathise totally with you - last year was probably the worst year financially we had for years.  Hubby also a self-employed plasterer and work was non-existant last year, it got so bad at one point we couldnt' even afford to advertise.  Having the bongo was the only thing that kept me going.  Luckily, at the end of the year before we had ferry for France booked and paid and I had bought camping cheques in advance so we were able to go to France as we had planned.  The rest of the year would have been dismal but for the changes we made to our camping life: still go but go to nearer places, look for cheap sites (there are loads of them) where you have the basics - you can make your own fun - CC's and CL's are also good.  Take as much food as you can with you and BBQ just about everything (bananas are great done in their skins!).  If you don't have one and you can afford it a cadac is great cos you can cook almost anything on it so food from home saves take-aways/eating out.   One very important thing I never skimped on - the vino - always had some LOL.  I do hope you can keep your caravan.

edited to add - hubby signed on with an agency and eventually got enough work to keep us going.  This year has been a bit better so hopefull things will improve all over.

Haven't had that for years. We had about 300 banana plants on our property adn when they all cma eripe at the same time ti was a problem disposing of bananas. We ha banana cake, banana bread, banana pudding and gave away loads. Have you tried making a bacon and banana toastie?

"(bananas are great done in their skins!)."

With a thin knife cut along the inside edge (the concave side) and then drizzle some brandy in or maybe Ameretto. Wrap in tin foil and pop into the embers whilst you eat the main course.

Bit of cream or better still ice cream if you can get it from the site shop

Mmmmmm

Yep, know the problem, lost my job last August in engineering. We have also made the decision that the van would only go as a last resort because we have had the van from new and have seen so many problems with older vans which we might be able to afford. Cars are easy to find at any price so we may have to downgrade in that area if all else fails. Good luck for the future and keep your chin up.

with such a drop in your income this would surely affect Child/working tax credit.  Make sure you inform them, and also make sure you claim every other benefit you are entitled to.  I know a lot of people don't like claiming, but you are entitled, you have paid into the system.

Have a look here

I agree with keeping the van, things are slowly on the up, but it is going to take some time.  Hang on in there.  Best of luck

Partner diagnosed with depression Christmas Eve subsequently moved out in January having first let me give up my job last year to care for my parents, and then allowed me to buy a newer van partly funded by a loan despite knowing he was ill and was leaving me!

So I sympathise with you all, total change in circumstances here through no fault of my own. Having to sell my beautiful twin axle sterling having not spent one night in it and I am gutted. Still to decide the fate of my original Elddis, probably put it in summer storage and use it when I can. I have a large house and my dependant parents to care for single handed along with a huge garden.

I hate my life right now.

Ali

Hi we were in the same boat from April last year down to working every three out of four weeks with a 25% drop in income. It was and has ,and still is hard but are managing to survive for the holidays. Just got to be realistic about things. We had two weeks in Brighton last year, including fuel and spends it was just short of £650.00, much better than the last time to italy on a package deal.

We have booked the usual weekends away and main holiday 8 in total and the cost is £600.00, just got to save up a bit now, first week away is in Windermere after the Easter holiday weekend.

As for getting rid of the van not in a million yrs its the only thing i have which is fully paid for and mine i.e house, car, etc.

Enjoy the year one and all.

been there done that twice or more over the years, keep your chin up and tell yourself thing can only get better,i did.do not jump in both feet and sell the van as yet because you may regret it down the line because it will cost you more to replace it when things improve.not telling you what to do but i sat down and listed every tiny bit of money going out, including the window cleaner at £3 a fortnight.stopped papers and magazines, cut down on fags (dont smoke now 10 years) ect ect.good luck whatever you do.

this is a really good thread, a lot of tips on how to manage the recession and still camp.  Through our hard time (still dodgy) I wouldnt have found it easy to get on without having the weekenders etc - it really was what kept me sane and kept me going.  During last year I also learned that we don't have to spend as much in shopping as we had been doing for years - buying loads of rubbish and a lot of it thrown out at the end of the week.  I also discovered I could live without my carry in Indian meal every week and started buying the Morrison's curry's instead saving about £14 on that alone.  Last year camping we went more often without EHU, saving a bit on site fees and we didn't use the awning or pop-up tent all the time either unless for longer breaks - these costs all add up.  We found great enjoyment camping without EHU, tending to sit outside more often, wrapped up, people watching (wine or gin in hand- there are some comforts that stay!).

Know the feeling, hubby lost his job last year in April, he might be getting a job soon as a carer, his police check has just come through.  We have still booked up for a week with our tent, will be £70 for the week, will have to go easy on spends though but need some time away.

Don't get rid of the caravan, hold onto it.  We nearly got one really cheap but then my car won't tow it, I'm gutted but pleased at the same time, as I don't think we could of afforded the insurance and storage etc.  If you allready have it, it's easier to hang on to. Hope something comes up for you and anyone else struggling at the moment.

thanks for all the lovely replies everyone proof indeed that this really is a wonderful friendly site.anyway after much discussions over the last day we are DEFO keeping the van even if it isnt used this year.we will pay our site fees and go down once a fortnight just to check on it.if we can afford even a weekend then for sure we will be away.
we have already managed to save £55 a month already just by changing energy and broadband suppliers and lowering our mobile tarriffs to the lowest available and looking at making more savings elsewhere too.
