Im not sure which type you have, but ours you have to squeeze the green button in sideways (Sort of pinch it action)  to release the grey upright peg type one that locks down the fridge door to stop it opening whilst traveling if that makes sence lol

Sounds like the Electrolux/Dometic fridge. We had the same problem on a previous van. I think you will find that part of the sliding catch has broken off and needs replacing. I can't for the life of remember how we got the old catch off.

Ours sometimes sticks and there is not much to get hold of.

We have started to leave the door wedged open a bit and not use the lock as the awning stored on the floor stops in opening any further

You should always leave the fridge door ajar when in storage to allow air flow. Our sliding catch has a setting for locking the door ajar to avoid mould and the seals sticking, this might be all the problem is. See if the door moves a little and is streaching the seal, good luck.

Thanks for the info all , its now fixed and the cider is safe , it took less than 30 secs to fix , things are so easy to fix when you know how .

Problem is still there.
I just bought a caravan yesterday and locked the fridge to bring it home and couldn't get it open again.
No-one actually said they had a "fix".
I have since dismantled the thing and there is a small rubber spring that would appear to go hard with age.

I am sorry to be picky but I found this (all be it ancient) by searching for locked fridge door.
I seem to remember that there were several different fridges discussed.
None seemed to address my issue so I thought to help anyone who ended up on this ancient thread I would add what I had found.
I didn't realise it was rigidly only relevant to the original question.
I didn't ask about that particular fridge but still ended up being directed here.
