Check your policy but I think you will find RAC will deal with the caravan if it is the car that fails. If it is the caravan that fails they will charge you.

In my experience with the RAC, in a big pile of brown stuff. I would seriously consider changing to Red Pennant if you are going to France or Mayday if staying in the UK. Both through the Caravan Club. I always found the RAC about as much use as the pile of brown stuff they left me standing in.

The RAC will not assist in an accident either, so you will be left with the police cleaning the debris from the side of the road and sending a bill to the insurance company. Unfortunately, no one is going to be very helpful when it comes to getting you home or to your destination. Another big tick for Mayday and Red Pennant.

Don't know where you are getting your info from and I have no experience of using it but according to their conditions they will recover the caravan if the car breaks down.

Likewise my green flag will.

RAC terms and conditions also state they will assist at an accident but you will be billed to recover the cost from your insurer.

The terms when I was a member were that the member would be billed in the event of an accident and would have to persue this from their insurance company. This is not the casae with Green Flag as they do not bill the member. I am unsure as to whether they bill the insurance company or not as I have not required their assistance after an accident. I do know of RAC members who have been involved in an accident and been asked for payment before they will even send any assistance.

As regard the problem with a trailer, I was told at the side of the road over the telephone that because I was towing a trailer, the RAC would not even discuss my breakdown further and I was left to fend for myself.

Ok - totally different situation to the question posed about cover for caravan. RAC do not cover trailers and horseboxes. They do cover caravans.

My towcar is covered by basic RAC cover and i have Normal insurance for the Caravan but no specific breakdown cover for the caravan.

I have been with Green flag for a few years now, but changed to green flag mayday through CC & not only saved 20 quid, but they will take your car & caravan to your booked destination and return it home at the end of your holiday if you cannot get your car fixed. i haven`t had to use it, luckily, But it sounds like a very good deal. Les

You will need extra cover for France.

What you should be looking for is...

1. A policy that will cover you to not only recover the caravan (and car) if the car breaks down or is involved in an accident, but that will also recover the caravan if the problem is with the caravan.

2. Then there is continuation of holiday, either with a replacement car and/or caravan or using hotels. Or "get you home" plus repatriation of both car and caravan.

3. And cover if the driver takes ill.

In this country you need at least no.1. Be aware also that there can be length limits on caravans for recovery.
