My bath is approx 5 ft long x 20 in wide (standard) and when I shower the water used is usually 2in deep.  I have a 10ltr hot water tank in the caravan so the question is - does the maths equation for the amount of water in the bath equate to the amount of water in the caravan tank so that I should get the whole of the shower in hot water?

Otherwise, if the electric water heater is on and the gas water heating is on (if such a thing is possible)  will you get continual hot water with two amounts of power?

Blimey there's a question for a Saturday afternoon.....

Without doing the maths but rather trying to visualize a 10ltr tank sliced into 2 inch pieces I wouldn't imagine it would cover much more than about 1/2 a standard bath.

To be honest in the caravan we very much use the shower to get wet, turn off, soap up, turn on and rinse. That way we can usually get an adult and 2 young kids clean on a single aquaroll+full hot water tank.

Over to the mathematicians......

You better get yourself another three water heaters, 10litres of water will only fill your bath by 1/2 inch.

You can have gas and electric heating together but it won't get you a longer shower unless you measure the time in seconds, caravan water heaters are nowhere near fast enough to give instantaneous hot water

mathematician here who has no interest in a caravan shower,,,just use the site facilities, they are infinitely better.   and as we all know infinity means a lot more than a lot more

in answer to your question  you will need about 3x your tank capacity for that amount of bath water   but as we all know, a shower takes far less water than a bath

just get on with it  or forget the shower,, go smelly for a week and catch up when you get home    you can guarantee having plenty of space on site with this approach

The site facilities are infinitely worse if a) they are closed for cleaning, b) there are queues, or c) the water temperature is set by the campsite at either freezing or scalding. I've encountered all those on campsites. On such occasions, using the caravan shower is infinitely better.

However, you don't shower in a caravan like you shower at home. You turn on the water, get wet, turn off water, apply soap and get sudsy, turn on water and rinse. This takes far less water than luxuriating under a torrent from the mains. The bottom of your mathematical bath would barely get wet.

Does your bath have the plug in, or is this figure with the plug out. If the plug is out then we need to know the height above sea level of the plug hole in the bath to calculate the rate at which the water drains away and the length of the shower. This way it is possible to calculate how much water has run away and how much is in the bath. Add the two together and that is how much water you have used. Alternatively, put the plug in when you take the shower and calculate how much water has been used.

Using your figures, I calculate that assuming the plug is in, and your measurements are correct you use approximately 37.5 litres of water. In converting to metric, I rounded numbers down to allow for the fact the bottom of the bath has curves, not 90 degree corners, although this is a very rough guess as I have no idea of the radii of these curves. Baths often have a recess in the middle below the handles too and therefore this is a very rough calculation.

However, the shower rose in a caravan does not release as much water as the one at home and the pump is at much lower pressure as the water system in a caravan is not intended to deliver as much water as the mains systems we have at home. There is no reason why you cannot get a shower out of a full aqua roll as many people do. Don't forget the wast tank will need emptying after though, not just refilling the aqua roll.

I notice you have covered almost all bases there LDKO. A comprehensive answer.

Does grey water drain at the same rate as clean water? Particles of dirt and dead skin will make the water effectively thicker which may affect the drain rate.

A hair free totally unblocked shower drain has been assumed I assume?

The above may have a minor bearing on the results

If you have soft water at home and travel somewhere with hard water, could this affect flow rate? Lol

I have never used the shower in the caravan, I think I am too wide, so usually go with the site facilities, a good old sink wash or a trip to the local pool!

An amusing collection of answers  Got my answer tho, not enough water!

 Perhaps one day some clever person will invent a caravan combi boiler so we could have continuous hot water, a tank the length of the caravan so we could wash and condition our hair and have a leisurely wash down.  Just joking!

I have used campsite showers, I am not too keen on being seen without makeup and with frizzy flyaway hair. Frightens animals and children.

Cheers

Carol

I think that this is the formula you are looking for. It works for us every time

P + W = Ph - K - Sw

where

P = pyramid water hog

W = Water to the top of P

Ph = Phil's shower

K = kaths shower

Sw = surplus water still in pyramid after we have both showered

...and the water is hot all the way through. Excellent system in our van

Phil

All I can say is thank goodness the shower doesn't last as long in a caravan as home. My 13 yr old daughter can spend half an hour in the shower at home, at which stage we start banging the door and reminding her to come out. In the caravan shes lucky if she gets 5 minutes Though she has been known to use the site facilities, when again she is gone for ages.

The rate the water drains is not going to affect the ammount of water used, just the ammount of water that collects in the shower tray. You also need to consider that you do not heat all the water as you also use some cold water.

You will certainly have enough water in an aqua roll for a shower and considering that you do not want a shower hot enough to melt the hair off your head, the ammount of hot water required is minimal. It is certainly possible to have a shower in the van, I know of many people who do. Although have also known of many who have run out of water when covered in soap too.

"known of many who have run out of water when covered in soap too. "

I saw that woman running to the tap to fill up her aquaroll. Covered in soap where it mattered. We parayed for rain

What you have forgotten is that you use water from the hot tank at 70deg C, which will scald you badly. So you cool it with cold water coming straight from the aquaroll. In practice you use equal amounts of hot and cold giving you 20litres of water. If you're carefull that's more than enough. In Winter though, when the cold water is colder you tend to use more hot than cold giving you probably 17litres total. Incidently the hot water also comes from the aquaroll as it has to make up what you've used.

We find that one person can have a very good shower, my wife tends to shower at night and I shower in the morning. No problem from one 40 litre aquaroll.

By using the practice of turning off the shower tap between actual need for rinsing, we find that there is more than enough hot water, and cold water when 40-litre aquaroll is full, for two people to shower and also wash their hair.  In practice though, we seldom both wash our hair on the same day.

Considering that we shower every day, there isn,t the need for prolonged scrubbing under the shower, to the extent that we run out of hot water.

Bertie.

OH is not so delicate as me, he doesn't mind the public facilities, so one less to bag hot water.  The reason for asking the question is because we have never used CLs due to them not having facilities so it is good to know that we could manage quite well, although as we are spending quite a time in France in June when the facilities seem to be unisex I am probably going to be using our shower all the time..

Thanks all

Carol
