we are devastated today.we set off this morning for our long awaited much need holiday and first trip out in the van this year.left the storage site, checked the tyre pressure etc all ok.
got 15 miles down the road on the motorway - bang tyre blew out taking the immediate area of the flooring above it.all i seen was a big cloud of debris coming out the side of the van and the realisation i was getting basicaly draged back.
the good thing is the van didnt snake about and no-one was hurtthankfully but our van and our holiday is in ruins.
the van had to be recovered and is sitting at a dealers/repair centre waiting on the insurance to asses it but the service guy has already said they wont repair that.
we will never find a van like that with any money we get.
we hadnt even had our new awning up this was its first ever trip as well.
gutted this afternoon,totally heartbroken

How awful for you, glad no one was injured!. We were at a dealers once when a chap came in with the same sort of damage, even broke the shower tray, but the dealer thought it could be repaired. If the insurance company won't it may be worth you getting a repair quote and settling for a cash payment and getting it repaired yourself.
Good luck with getting it sorted.
PS I could not see the pictures for some reason.

OMG that is awful. Don't go all gloomy till insurance has assessed it and you know the facts for definate. It may be repairable - wait first. Not good news at the beginning of the season though.
------------- Smoke me a kipper ............ I'll be back for breakfast!!!!!
Sorry to hear about that. Can't see pics btw, see if you can get them up, some on here might be able to advise you. Could it be diy repairable even if its not worth a professional repair? see what the assesor says, if its writ off it might be worth buying off ins co & repairing it yourself. How old were the tyres?

Sorted your pics for you (you had too many [ IMG][ /IMG])
Damage looks bad but not irreparable from the photos at least.
I see the tyre stayed on so Tyron bands wouldn't have made a difference
So sorry to hear about your problem, I cant see your pics either. I had a blow out on a camping trailer a few years back after just fitting new plastic mudguards of which one totally disappeared. For the last four years we have towed the van to Dorset twice, New Forest and Cornwall and a blow out is one thing that was on my mind although my tyres were not old and were in good condition visibly. This June we are heading back down to Dorset but with two new tyres, fitted a couple of weeks ago.
I really feel for you. What a rotten end to what should have been a lovely week away. It must have been a really scary experience for you - the only good thing about it is that nobody was hurt.
Will the campsite perhaps carry your deposit over for a different week a bit later on when you're sorted out? You must be so disappointed.
Hope you manage to get your van repaired one way or another.
Oh that's a shame, I'm sorry to read your bad news there Fifebloke. My mate had a blow out similar to yours, it too blew the bathroom floor up as well as damaging the side wall. I don't know who did the work but his was rebuilt. Let's hope your insurance is up to the mark & get it sorted for you.

i wouldnt know where to start tbh plus its the hidden damage as well that worries the repairers.
the tyres were replaced last april by the previous owners and had done approx 400 miles since then.if it is written off im going to ask if i can have the cusions etc as these were all recovered and if we ever get another van(this has shaken me up more than i thought it would)i would use them for there.as yet being honest I'm undecided if another van is going to happen.im thinking right now of getting a static

The damage may look worse than it is. Damage repair isn't a speciality of mine - strange, considering the number of blowouts I've had, but I've seen wonderful things achieved with a bit of fibreglass.
Try and get the best settlement figure you can from the insurance, and buy back the wreck. Then get advice on here about the best way to fix it on a tight budget.
I know things seem bad at the moment, but it all may look better in a day or two. In my experience, blowouts generally take out bodywork fairly easily, but don't usually do much structural damage.

Second hand wheel arch and a bit of making good and it'll be as right as rain. Just make sure to get the gas system checked out for leaks before reconnecting the gas bottle.
Gutted for you: What a start to a much awaited holiday, your bound to be gutted but dont lose hope, with a bit of luck you'll get something sorted out with your insurance & still get away at some point, fingers crossed for you, & thank goodness nobody was hurt & that you;s are still here to tell the tale.I tell you tho your driving skills must be really good for no one to be hurt with that kind of damage so be proud of that.

thanks sudsy although it isnt my job im a qualified hgv driver so maybe that was a blessing there, although being honest it was instinct that kicked in when it happened.
another reason why i go mad when i see vans roaring by me when im doing 60 towing.had i been doing 70 it would have been a different outcome of that i have no doubt

Really sorry to hear about you van. Just make sure you get best quote on insurance my bro wrote his car of after going round a corner and car coming other way was on wrong side ( i no abit differant from caravan ) but his insurance quoted him well under what car was worth until he did some research on what his car was worth, and got the insurance company to get somewhere quite close to what his car was worth.
Hopeyou manage to get sorted and get a new or your van fixed soon to enjoy the rest of the season.
