what little extras do you find are really useful for the caravan & awning . or things that we should carry as spares.

I'm going to be placing an online order for loo chemicals soon , so are there any extra bits I should get at the same time to save on the postage.

( I don't drive , so getting to our local caravan shop means I would have to have DH take me , and he's not one for browsing . I would be in there for hours , and he would not be amused ).

I think we have most of what we need already , but would like to know what little gadgets etc are really worth having.

Duck tape
Tenacious tape
Spare pole clamps
spare luminous guy lines
6 Clingons/holdons

Think of the things you have in the toolbox at home and see if you would use it while away in the van - if so you need it

Hi Nigel , thanks , I have all those in my bag of pegs from the tent , which I've transferred to the caravan anyway. there was also a mini toolbox that came with he van , pliers, spanners, screwdrivers etc .

Have also got awning pole springs and buttons ,an awning rail spreader and brush, silcon spray.

I have ordered spare caravan keys too, but these last few items I ordered all seperately, and paid seperate postage for them all and think now is the time to get everything I can in one fell swoop .

How sweet J&S but I havent got room for anyone elses OH in my van
Bulbs , thats something I hadnt thought of. I do have a clip on mains light with spare bulb already in the van . It came in handy when the batery went flat, so I bought another one for the awning too.

we have small strip lights and spotlights in the van , will have to look at them for the sizes, and fuses too. Are caravan bulbs and fuses only available in caravan shops ? Or would they be in B&Q or wilkinsons ,somewhere like that ?

One of the most useful things I bought for our van was an extra shelf for the oven - you can buy an adjustable one to fit the majority of ovens either in camping shops or like we did an outdoor camping exhibition.

Same here Tparkes, makes a big difference. Also if the oven is on anyway, makes sense to use as much of the space as possible.

Sounds silly, but I got one of those little things you cover the plughole in the kitchen sink, no idea what they're called, but looks like a tiny sieve? Didnt want my pipes getting clogged!

Torch and spare batteries or wind up lantern if off electric and the battery goes during the night so you loose all lighting!

We also have another source of cooking in case the regulator goes again (BBQ - charcoal not gas/ meths stove!), a fold up water container so if a tap goes and we have to turn off the caravan water supply we can use it for hand washing!

If using gas and not on electric we take an audible CO alarm.

Other very useful extras are mini sewing kit, superglue, insulation tape, string to make a washing line in the awning and clothes pegs!

We also found one of the most useful bits of equipment is two way radios for guiding the driver reversing – or calling kids back from play area to eat!

Furniture Polish for the obvious but its also useful for the awning rail to assist the awning in gliding through.

Fuses which I think can only be found in caravan accessory shops

Bucket

Watering can for filling toilet cistern

First Aid bag

Spirit level

Fire Extinguisher/blanket

Plastic tube on a rope to attach to the water tap to assist in filling the water hog

Work gloves

Is there any room for clothes and bedding now?

Phil

I can understand your dilemma in what you have written here but to be honest the only place that you are going to finds things that you didn't know you needed is in a caravan shop especially if it is a good one and your DH is going to be interested in something there.

The fuses that you need for your Zig only may be available in Maplins or Halfords but you will be definitely be able to get them in a caravan shop, and it's worth having spares so tell your DH that you need to get some for spares and that he'll have to be there to make sure that they are the right ones...

And then while you are there just say "oh I wonder if..."

Make it an exciting visit and by the time you get to the checkout he'll be a addicted caravan shop browser

Thanks for the replies ,some good ideas there. lots of which we have already, the van was quite well equipped with extras.
The sink thingy reminded me there is no plug in the kithen sink either. I saw oven shelves while browsing online earlier and thought that was a good idea, need to find out which cooker I have first, there were a few to choose from.

RC, you obviously have never met my DH. never in a million years would I convince him that shopping can be interesting let alone exciting enough to turn him into a browser.

And they are a weird lot in the caravan shop too, the times we have been there have not been a particularly pleasant experience , very unusual staff.

OH uses a large lemonade bottle to carry water to fill up the loo flash tank, also a small plastic funnel if a bigger container to pour into same flush tank.  If you are a lady who likes to wear makeup when camping, as I do, I have a small tradesman's type plastic tool box with clear lid that has moveable inserts in it and I can size the compartments to carry eyeshadows, eye liner, pencils, lipsticks, foundation etc.  The one I have is just the depth of the upper cupboard and easy to take out and get items without having to rummage in a wash bag.  You can also stick a cheap 6" x 4" plastic mirror on the inside of the lid.  I use a clear plastic tumbler with screw on lid for gravy powder as if an opened packets falls over it flies all over the cupboard. Robert Dyas are selling a small slot together plastic clother dryer for £12.99, not a rotary, has solid arms.We have one of the camping rotary wash lines which cost £19 but it's just that bit too big to get in the locker.

Thanks michael and carol. I have a couple of the airers that hang out the windows, they were okay to dry towels and swimsuits on.

I also used a lemonade bottle to fill the flush , and cut the end off another to fill the aquaroll ,found it easier than using the hosepipe. another good tip that was given here .

The screw top tumblers were also mentioned a few weeks ago on the tent forum ,and I got them for tea coffee and sugar about 40p each in asda , brilliant

sadly I'm not a bit glamorous when camping (or any other time really) and have only 3 items of makeup. eye pencil , lip gloss and blusher , can fit them in my jeans pocket lol.
