Please forgive my "noviceness" but when we recently acquired our first caravan I was so looking forward to having my own shower rather than tripping off to the sites facilities in the cold. On our first trip I thought it was great but my husband continued to use the site showers.
I have been reading some posts and it looks like lots of people actually only use their caravan shower in emergencies. Why is this? Is it because of the hot water thing/amount of water? Am I being extravagent wanting to use my shower and oh, luxury of luxuries, my own toilet!
So is it caravan shower/toilet or site shower/toilet?
I must admit, I did feel a bit mean sending my husband off to the tap for more water and the waste with my mmmmmm.
Dont worry Christina, its purely a matter of personal choice. I always use the loo and shower in the van. My OH and son will use site showers or our own, depending how the mood takes them. We sometimes stay on caravan Club CL sites with no facilities (although we always opt for ehu sites) so we have to use the ones in the van. There is no right or wrong, just personal preference. Im happy to fill the aquaroll or empty the wastemaster. I draw the line at the loo tho!

We tend to use site facilities as there are 5 of us so you can imagine how many times the aquaroll would have to be filled if we used the caravan shower! Same with the loos really altho we do use the one in the van in the evenings/night then empty it 1st thing.
with our loo, we only use it for number 2's if its far to far to walk to the loo, and whi ever does it has to empty the toilet, as for the shower ours isnt that good and i use the site one, if my shower was better id use it all the time.
Yes well. I'm glad someone's brought up emptying the loo. I would have thought it needs to be emptied every day, even if it's not getting filled, am I right?
It all depends on the site facilities really. If the shower block is minging then we use the van. In most cases I use site facilities but OH uses the van shower. No Number 2's permitted unless both legs are broken and we have forgotten the crutches! When I was showing the youngest (14 yrs) how to empty the toilet cassette he refused to do it, so I told him that if he was going to use the loo then he took his turn emptying it. He has not used the loo in the van since!
Sometimes use site facilities but mostly use the van. I am used to changing the toilet cassette and I'd rather know where my kids are instead of being vulnerable in the gents. Takes a few minutes to rinse clean and recharge the toilet so I am not too sure of all the fuss about not using it as that's what it's for.
I can't imagine many mums being squeamish about emptying a cassette considering it is much less work than changing a dirty nappy.
All down to what you can live with and if you are prepared to fill the aquarolls etc. I often shower the kids in the van at nights as well. Especially if we are on mains hook up. Then it's a no brainer for me.
Saying that I can understand those with the smaller bathrooms with combined shower tray and floor using facilities more often to shower as the wet floor can be a pain.
we change our loo when its about 3/4 full, had a problem on the last trip where it went over the top and i had to drain the bowl as the cassette was full, didnt enjoy that.
If we are staying on a site that has lovely clean showers and the use of them is included in the price of the pitch then we use them (we want to get our moneysworth) and We only use the caravan toilet at night. But if we are at a rally on a site without facilites then we use the caravan shower etc as we have no choice. The caravan shower is OK but there is a risk of running out of water at a crucial point and space is quite limited in our caravan.
We also empty our loo when it is about 3/4 full but we dont use it for number 2s. We do use the shower in the van only if OH is too crook to walk to the shower block.
I usually change the toilet in the mornings after everyone is up and sorted and it is usually about 3/4 full. On occasion if there is a sick child or two (yeuch) cN be more.
I don't use the communal facilities at all - can't bear sharing the whole experience no matter how nice they are. Hubby loves using them especially CC site ones which he says are wonderful. I therefore empty the loo every evening as I'm the one that fills it up mostly ! Hubby uses it for a pee though ! Indeed he accidently peed in it at the weekend while I was emptying it ! I found him mopping out the locker when I got back ! I don't think he'll be forgetting it for a while ! That'll teach us to drink a bottle of wine before doing the chores !!!
