We have just fininshed our first bottle of Butane and while we have just been away we couldnt help notice most people have the red Propane ones, we have heard Propane doesnt freeze but cannot be kept in the gas locker,
Any advise on which is best before we renew or buy a propane regulator
Thanks
Chris

Propane can be kept in the gas locker - no problem. There are lots of posts on here about propane v. butane. Just use the search. We use the propane, but many still use butane.

Yet another caravan myth to add to the collection
Propane will not freeze above -40ºC
If used with the 37mb regulator will burn hotter
It is not available as a refill in Europe but can be refilled at garages apparently
It is lighter than, and has a vapour pressure 5 times greater than, Butane
If you have a newer 30mb regulator (fitted after 2003) then you will only need to change the pigtail, not the complete regulator

The ability of using propane in very cold weather is a bonus but suspect a lot of people go for propane because they can use lightweight bottles. Also unless you use a lot of gas its really uneconomic to keep swapping between butane and propane.
I am looking at getting a light weight gas bottle for the cadac and need to keep nose weight down. Can you get lite bottles in butane or is it only available in propane?

Why not either use just a small 4.5 kg bottle from Calor or as we do a Camping Gaz 907, if you need to control weight and like butane.
Calorlite are so far only propane and because they are 6 kg overall they are not light, just much lighter than the standard 6 kg.
Our cadac runs perfectly well on propane. It was supplied with a spare jet type thingy for use with propane (we initially used it with butane with the old caravan) but I've lost it and so its working fine without it.
we use propaen all the time now got fed up swopping for summer butane. Propane is needed for the alde heating in the van, and our cadac runs ok on it as well
Butane will run more appliances, simultaneously, apparently.
I prefer butane in summer, and propane in winter: I don't like the smell of propane burning - apprenticeship served in furnace/press shop!

I think the reverse is true you can run more of propane. You can get more gas out of a propane bottle per hour than a butane bottle. Also if you run butane at low temperatures then as it vapourises it cools and it won't allow as much gas flow
I hope you don't mind me asking a related question....Is it OK to have butane & propane bottles (both using the correct regulator) connected to the caravan feed by a "T" piece and switching on whichever gas is required at the bottle. I'm looking to extend my camping season but don't want to be stuck if the butane freezes.

You can get snap on connectors which are what I use so I have the option to connect the fridge when I'm not using EHU. I think the problem with what you are suggesting is that if you get distracted whilst changing over you have the potential to have both going which could cause some pressure overloading and potentially a big bang. If you use snap on then this situation cannot occur. Still don't take my word for it, I'm not CORGI registered

The use of both butane and propane is not unknown but I'm not sure on the T piece arrangement - if this is possible then you would have to place non-return valves on each side of the T to stop one bottle filling the other if both taps were accidentally left on - best for you to check this with a registered Gas Safe LPG installer
