Dear Caravanners and Campervanners, I have often wondered many times why caravan and campervan owners use the bathroom and shower facilities on campsites rather than their own. I am a very happy tent owner and have no problem with anyone using the facilities but if you have spent thousands of pounds on luxurous interiors why would you then choose to use public facilities? I really don't get it! Am I missing something? Enlighten me please.
yes we are caravanners and my wife often asks the same thing.
infact we were away not long ago and my wifey made us some luverly grub and the family next to us said oh we never use cooker barbeque only for us dont want smells in van .
then on the other hand we are all funny in our own little way i guess

Its swings and round abouts, we pay for the facilities so its up to the individual which they prefer. I have been to sites and have paid £20.00 a night, and the showers were terrible dirty and full of cobwebs so we used are own. If we dont use the shower its just something else not to clean when we come home.

Err... how about because we pay for them in our site fees just like you do in your tent, or perhaps it is because we don't like to do jobbies in our cassette toilet, or because when showering we would like the opportunity of unlimited water rather than the 10 litres of water in our water heaters, or even that is is sometimes difficult for a family of 4 to get ready at the same time in the van.We never use the washing up points though, only ever wash the dishes in the van.
So, other than the toilet block we do everything in the luxurious surroundings of our multi-thousand pound caravan, using the toilet blocks simply for convenience and the fact that paying for the facilities is not optional so we may as well get what we pay for. Take a fiver a night off my site fees and I may have a rethink though!
I used to be a very happy tenter too, but I was kidding myself!!!
If we are on a site with nice clean facilities we use them especially as they are usually included in the price of the pitch and the toilet in the caravan is restricted to night time use only. However we often rally on sites with no facilities and then of course the ones in the caravan have to be used all the time. Having a shower in the caravan can be an interesting experience for 4 of us involving several trips to refill the aquarolls!!!
IMO If tent campers want exclusive use of the site toilets and showers they should pay more for their pitch.
i dont want to cart my families turds halfway round a site as i am the only person that seems to be able to empty the cassette loo but like someone else said why do it if you have paid to use the facilties then use them one less job to do really. the bonus being if you go to sites without a toilet block then we can have our privacy gives us a bit more scope on that area of camping and caravaning whilst there are pro's and con's to both
Well I only have a tiny shower cubicle in my van . you cant have a long lazy shower in a caravan as you only have a barrel of water not an unlimited supply , and you have to wait for the water to heat up first too.
Boycieb, same problem with our eldest. he is 6' 7" and will not fit in the van shower... or anywhere else for that matter. When he comes with us he takes up a spot under the Heiki and stays there! :)
There aren't many caravans you can buy without all the facilities. Personally I would never use a shower in a caravan - the danger of damp is high enough without adding to it!
We would never think about using the toilets in the shower blocks unless we happened to be nearer to them than to our van. Showers are a different matter SWMBO always uses the shower in the van, but then she does not trail the water about ( she has a skivvy to do that ), but I always use the site showers if there are any I prefer a shower with plentious supplies of hot running water.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

Try looking inside a caravan, look at the facilities on offer, then compare with the onsite facilities, then try emptying a toilet cassette & try dragging an aquaroll across the site to fill it, followed by waste water tank to empty it.

Funny that, because the same inability to empty the cassette runs in my family too.
To the original poster, why on earth would you want to camp in a tent when you have the option of a, as you put it, luxurious caravan?
From personal opinion I'd rather drop one in a room a little bigger than a coffin stood upright for the toilet fairy to whisk it away for me, but on the half a dozen times I'm in a farmers field with a tap and a hole in the ground in the Yorkshire Dales I can deal with it.
To answer your question, each to his own is my guess dude
