Hi all
I hope someone can help ![](https://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/chatter/forum_images/smiley7.gif)
I have a old caravan, as it is over 20 years old alot of insurance companys will not insure me . However after a long look E&L ( i know bad move) where the only ones that would insure me.
Now i have had to make a Claim as some toerags nicked it smashed the side window and nakered the front stabiliser and floor. Have been trying to get a window but was informed that the window was no longer available as it was an old carvan ![](https://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/chatter/forum_images/smiley19.gif) My claim has now been looked at and they are not paying out due to the fact that i had taken of the wheel clamp as we where going away that day.
Can anyone help? Does anyone know where i can get a very cheap window in Scotland or would i just be better selling for spares and repairs?
Cheers
Kelly

Did you try the CC insurance, they will insure a van of that age with no problems and what is more if you ever have to make a claim you will not get the aggo from them they simply pay out.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

to be fair to E&I the policy is fairly specific in this regard.
it does clearly state that they will not pay if the security requirements are not adhered to. just read it as my renewal is up next month.
basically they have a very tightly worded policy, so they are sticking to this, which they are well within their rights to do.
if you look at some other companies, their policy is a little less prescriptive.
in my expereince, study the policy, and be fully aware of the exclusions and limitations that are listed.
sorry i cant be of help, but i just want to make others aware that you cant blame the insurance company....in fact they have been very clever in writing a tightly worded policy.....if you dont like the limitations of a policy go elsewhere....this is exactly what i do.

someone should ask them what good would a wheel clamp do when someone simply wants to break in through a window???
a wheel clamp on each wheel wouldnt prevent that.
insurance companies take the p**s sometimes

The van was nicked so the wheel clamp may have stopped or at least slowed them down.

yes i was nicked, but they still got in through window (beyond me how they did that) but if i did have wheel clamp on they would still have found a way to nick it.
i was only claiming for window and floor not for the whole caravan. what would have happened if on holiday no clamp or hitchlock and same thing happened?

the annoying thing is, is that this is exaclty what insurance is for.....its just these companies are clever. at the end of the day they want to limit what they pay out as this effects their profits and their own underinsurance premiums...yes they will insure themselves against claims. the tightly worded policy will limit what they pay for their own insurance protection policy.
and you would have found that they wouldnt pay out either if you were not hitch/wheel locked up on site....you would need to have clamp and hitchlock on site also.
the policy is very specific..... it needs locks on at all times, and level of security depends on value. we have e&i, and am regimental to make sure i fit in with the policy and its security requirements.
i dont think that they insure if you have seasonal pitch either, although i know a few poeple who assume that it does.
incidentally...i'm not insuring with e&i this year as their premium has doubled....i got a cracking deal last year, but now off elsewhere for a more comprehensive policy to fit my needs.

kelly, now that changes things somewhat......if you told them you only have a hitchlock and they were ok then you sound to have been misled.
yes they may argue that you should have read the policy, but based on what your requriements and needs were, the policy was not fit for purpose.
might i suggest you make a formal complaint to them explaining what was requried and agreed at the application stage, and tell them that as a result of the claim you have discsovered that the poicy does not fit the agreed requirements.
if you dont like their response, then just take it to the Financial Ombudsman service. (the FOS wont be interested until you get a response from E&I). in fact just take it to the FOS for the hell of it....it will cost E&I £500 for the FOS just to open your envelope!

You said in the first post that you had taken the wheel clamp off because you were going away the following day (although why anyone should do that beats me) now you say you told them you only had a hitch lock.
You should probably have the clamp and hitch lock on on a site as well, I have to with my insurance.

How can you blame E&L if you took the wheelclamp off?, I had a claim with them, they paid up no problem for storm damage...

And as i was going away at 5am i didnt want to wake up my street by taking it off plus it would have been dark at that time of morning.

E & L have a terrible reputation with people insuring their horses as well as caravans. I would never use them.
