were going to scotland kirkaldy in 10 days with the caravan. Hubbys nick names captin slow when it come to driving slow and steadys his mottos so whel others from here will gtet there in about 4 hours were more like 6 or 7 with his stops so we thought instead of hitting a rush hour one end or another of the day setting of and driving up over night was an idea as were allowed on site from 9 30am. do any of you prefare to go over night. I am not sure about it but hubby thinks its the best plan

It worked well for us up to and in middle age, but now I am too concerned that I might nod-off, particularly if the rest of them in the car already have.
So the driver must be 100% confident that they will not get sleepy.
Today starting at 04:00 and breakfasting through the mad 08:00 to 09:00 works just fine.
We'll be driving overnight to get to Dover for a 6am crossing in 4 weeks time. We're really excitied about it! But there are 2 of us to share the driving & we plan to go to bed late afternoon for a few hours (whether that'll actually happen is a different matter tho!)
We travel to Cornwall from Birmingham with a 4.00am start so that we arrive at storage for about 8.00am and then on to our site for about 9.00am. However we never travel on a Saturday mainly because OH is an optician so we only ever take mid week to midweek breaks. However we now try to get away from work at about 4.00pm and travel straight down to arrive on site at about 9.30 where we just find a vacant pitch. We then get a good nights sleep and if needed we move the van to its proper pitch the next day.

never towed in darkness and dont really fancy doing so, before big al starts I know the van is the same size at night lol
being a morning person i am okay from about 4am assuming i can get some sleep the night before. wendy as you are going from bury to kirkaldy the only ropey bit of road is the forth bridge, it is only bad between 7am and 10am and 4pm and 7pm avoid that and you will be sound
my OH sinks down in the seat when we get overtaken by hgv's, she cant stand being overtaken, nigella mansell, i would much prefer to be traveling at night and dont mind if others around me are asleep, just make sure you have a good nap before setting off so you are wide awake as it can get tiring, when i used to drive hgv's starting early i would pray for rush hour or someone to cut me up, just for the adrenalin rush to keep me awake, i found dawn and dusk the worst times.
We travel to Cornwall from Birmingham with a 4.00am start to arrive on site at about 9.00am. However since OH is an optician we only ever take Wednesday to Wednesday breaks and have started to leave work early to get down to Cornwall before 9.00pm.

last year we went to the New Forrest so decided to travel thro the night husband did our driving and our two daughters did there driving all the females thought it was the best way to travel, but the males (whimps) said never again so this year we are going the coxwolds setting off on the friday stopping in derbyshire for 2 nights then doing the last bit on the Sunday (hope this pleases them)
We prefer to leave early a.m. as opposed to travelling o/night. As I get older I find that I need some sleep whereas in my youth o/night was no problem.
my hubby works night shift so he will sleep as normal on the day we go (next friday) hoping to set off mid afternoon so will miss most of the rush hour traffic. site has early arrivals area so we can have a wee catch up before getting on our pitch.
he can then have 40 winks throughout the day on the saturday & will be back to normal on the sunday.
Night time is by far the best.No traffific. I drive to st ives every year starting at 10 pm. just makesure you stop regularly. 12 cans of coke for the caffeine and paracetamol for the sciatica and we are off. love it!
