Greetings, just got back from a weeks caravaning in an amazing place in Dorset, site was lovely etc, but what wound me up was after 4 days of a tent set up on a pitch, their holiday was over and they left, we come back from a day out to see a caravan hooked up on the pitch, I had walked passed them as they was finishing putting the awning up on the way to the showers, when I came back, they had decided to block up the main route to the toilet block with two wind breaks and the gap that they couldnt cover they put a bench and seats across. Now this was a huge gap, it was shown to me by the warden as the path to use and no doubt everyone of our neighbours as it meant a lengthy detour to get round. Bearing in mind they had a big pitch in order to set up some privacy. Although when we awoke I think someone wasnt aware of the blockade as it got really dark and must have stumbled into it. Didn't have a chance to have a chat with the people in the van as we left the next day, now I use windbreaks, mainly doing what it says on the tin and never in this instance of recreating the new Great wall of Dorset. Never seen this before, anyone else?

Not seen anyone block a path but on a site in dorset we were next to the fence to the donkey field. people and children on bikes would cross our pitch and across our door to get to the wire to view the donkeys. They would also run up and down the wire behind our awning and van - a gap of only 2 feet.

We left plenty of viewing room the other side but that didn't help (it was a good third of our pitch)

In the end we put up a windbreak security wall and parked the car touching the fence.

No excuse for blocking a path but some people need to respect others space.  This is often why the windbreaks are erected.

Yes we put up a windbreak on a site a few years ago to stop kids on their bikes using our pitch as a shortcut on their bikes. We always put up a 3ft windbreak as we have dogs and it stops them from barking at everything that passes by but otherwise I would not put one up.

When a similar subject was raised a few months ago, about people cutting across pitches, I thought it was a fuss about nothing - until we were on a CC site recently and pitched between a row of 'vans and the toilet block. There was a grass area between the pitches, but I guess three out of five people ignored the grass and walked across the pitch we were on, and in many cases very close to the 'van. One youngster even walked along the side of our van running his hand along the van! Maybe we'll have to think about getting a windbreak. Or make sure that we are not pitched on a route to the loos!

The amount fenced off was amazing, the gap was huge and could have easily been halved and still been left with a generous amount. Im all for protecting my own property, but surely some sort of common sense is needed.

Yep - I use windbreakes and lots of them to

a) stop people walking/biking acrross my pitch

b) give my kids a visible barrier of where they are and arnt alowed to play (they are 4 and 2)

The day that other parents are more acountable for their children and stop them riding through my pitch is the day I will remove my windbreaks!

It is the fault of lack of parental advice and disipline that children have no respect for other people, belongings or property. My grandchildren were taught from very young not to cross other peoples pitch.

Hi All,

I too dont like to see loads of windbreaks on sites but understand some people have to use them for children/ pets but there is always the odd ones that want to define there area with the great wall of windbreaks which i think says to other campers keep away i dont want to talk or know you!!!

i only use mine for the barbecue or a shade for the dog

 cheers

Don't know about lack of parental discipline but on a site recently our pitch was on the way to the loos from half of the site and everyone, adults and kids, from that half cut across our pitch. So parents leading by example!!! Most to within a foot from our front window staring at us having our meals etc. Ignorance. We thought about buying a windbreak to put around the front of the van and round the water hog just to keep the shortcutters some respectable distance from the van but concluded that that would make our pitch too large. So we put up with it.

Now we are going to study maps of sites and make a list of preferred pitches before we get there which are not on the route to the loos to avoid short cutters.

The situation mentioned by the OP was wrong but I can maybe understand why they did it. If folks showed a little more consideration there would be no need for it.

Most sites we visit have a list of site rules but not one mentions respect for a pitch. Maybe they should start doing that. CC;  C&CC and others please note

Phil

I usually use two of the beach type ones so the dogs can wander in and out without constantly being tied up, but last time out in the van I didn't put them up - which resulted in a big rip in the bottom of the awning when a teenage lad playing football where he shouldn't have been slipped and slammed feet first straight into it. So the windbreaks will be up every time now, but I would never use them to block off a path.

The windbreak manufacturers must be overjoyed at the increase in inconsideration....

We keep a windbreak just for this purpose but rarely have to use it. But when you need it you definitely need it. Doesn't sound like the van in the OP did but it's difficult to judge without seeing it. I don't know why many people have so much difficulty showing respect for other campers - windbreaking off half the site for their own purposes is just as inconsiderate as walking too close. I think sometimes we all would be happier on our own site with nobody else, but then it would be very lonely.

We use wndbreaks to create what we call a garden for our toddler to be and prevent her from doing a 30 second mile as toddlers do. But we wouldnt use them to create a No Go zone. But I would use them on the ends of the caravan to guide the brain dead from cutting right in front of the awning nothing worse then sitting down as a family for a meal and eveyone gawps at you as they pass by your awning window.

We use windbreaks at times, would never block a path but we do like a defined area for the dogs to walk about in, I havent got a problem with windbreaks at all and in fact they are jolly useful for stopping the wind!
