Hello all,

this will be our second year of caravanning so we are still a bit wet behind the ears!! lol.

I would be grateful for anybody's advice regarding stopping at motorway service stations for refreshments (not overnight). I was wondering if anyone has any hesitations in leaving their van unattended whilst they go into the services.

I have looked at a few service stations online and they do cater for caravanner''s but I am still weary about leaving it alone even if it is only for half an hour.

If anybody has any tips/advice for me I would be extremely grateful and if anyone has used sedgemoor services (m5 southbound)  it would be good to hear from you.

Maybe I am worrying about nothing but this will be the first time we will of left the caravan on it's own in a service station as before we have only towed the caravan for a max of 2 hours when we have gone away.

Regards

Richard

We use the services a lot, but we always make sure one of us stays with the van, otherwise our insurance requires us to fit the hitchlock and wheelclamp.  As I see it the choice is yours.

Hope this helps

We always make sure one of us stays whilst other one visit's services just in case, as well as the fact we normally have a couple of dogs with us.
We have never been able to get into Sedgemoor services as its always full at what ever time of day it is. The easiest one we have got into and a space is Taunton services
Have fun on your trip

Thanks guys,

I was also thinking the same about 1 of us staying with the van whilst the others went into the services. Seems like the best plan, better to be safe than sorry isnt it :-). Much appreciated...

We avoid the services as much as we can and come off and stop in a layby for a break. The caravan spaces are often either full or being used by lorries. The food is terrible anyway.

The Services on the M42 is one we like. Its kind of half way to anywhere from where we are, so heading south west we generally stop there. Its got a very good dog walking area. Anyway, we never leave the van unattended and often see caravanners actually making tea in their vans rather than go in and use the cafe. The motorways around Brimingham have a bit of a reputation for stolen vans - easy and quick to get far away.

Insurance requires that locks are fitted if we do leave the van unattended.

To be honest, when  on a journey,  we never leave the van unattended whether at Motorway services or elsewhere

Phil

I'd never leave our van hitched to the car & unattended anywhere. My wife used to work on a service area & they once had a caravan taken from the parking area. When the family returned all they found was their car.

If you're only going to pull over for a short break, why not brew up in the van, enjoy your refreshments & stretch your legs all in sight of your outfit.

I enjoy watching caravanners take a break in the services. They all get on here spouting their heirs & graces then I see them pull up, ptrepare a meal, wash up & let the waste water run down the lorry park. While she's doing the washing up, he walked the dog & never cleaned up behind it.

Enjoy your van & don't lose sight of it.

don't have to much of an issue leaving it unattended, it is insured after all but as not to tempt fate I always drop the hitch lock on, only takes seconds and as someone said iirc the hitch lock is required for the insurance to be valid.

I always take the jockey wheel of my FC to travel anyway, had it come loose once and bounce along the road not a nice experience. I usually solo camp so have to leave it alone if i stop.

Bit of a weird mix of the general to the specific there, Basilbrush. Are you claiming that all those who come "on here" to "spout their heirs and graces" carry out such anti-social activities, or just a few?

It should be noted that some services forbid the dropping of steadies on the car park, and nearly all would frown on the use bottled gas.

We never leave our 'van unattended.  Me and kids run into services to go to the loo and buy coffee while dh gets dogs out car, while he goes to the loo and buy whatever i wait with 'van, kids and dogs.  Then dh walks dogs and we have our coffee and back on our way again.

M5 southbound, sedgemoor is fantastic for us caravanners as it has a complete seperate area for caravans away from the car and truck parks. We use it for over night stops on way to devon/ cornwall, its almost like a site on a friday night lol.

Stopped at Michaelwood Services M5 north once. Psrked within sight of the cafeteria and dropped the hitchlock on. Couldnt get out of there quick enough though as I thought someone might relieve me of my caravan.

We bought a pump pot  from Argos and use that in the caravan to make drinks how we like them. Take our own snack with us in the cooler usually home made egg and bacon pie and stand outside (if fine weather) and eat/drink standing up to get the circulation back into the old legs . Hitch lock is ALWAYS put ON for travelling anyway. We never go into the services, don't care for the food or the over priced tepid drinks you get.

Eat, drink and off we go again with holiday money still in the wallet
