Already looking for holiday next year and quite like the idea of going Isle of Wight. How much is it roughly to take your caravan over? any other advice (if there is any to give) is greatfully recieved thanks. Ive only ever been once before back in 1989 with my parents and i was only 14 at the time.

Cheers

The only real way of finding out is to put all the details into RedFunnel or Wightlink websites as if you were buying a ticket. From memory it was at least £200 return when I had a go, but they both do special offers if you're prepared to travel at odd times, and they do a five day offer that includes the campsite fee. We are going via one of the Camping and Caravaning Club offers for £104 return (which means going after 3pm in both directions) - there's several other offers for members. Compared with the full cost its worth the membership fee alone if you're not a member. I think the Caravan Club also does discounted tickets but I think you can only get this if you're going to one of their two sites whereas you can get the C&CC offers no matter which site you go to.

1989? I haven't been there since 1963, so can't really give you any up-to-date advice! However, this link will give you an idea of "special deal" prices (for 2009) using Red Funnel.
As evenstephen suggests, check with the Camping and Caravanning Club for their Wightlink deals.

Don't forget that you can travel from Lymington to Yarmouth, which might be cheaper.

Just looked at their prices. It is cosiderably cheaper to do a return trip to France from Dover with car/caravan than it is to IOW....

Just come back from 10 days camping on Isle of Wight, and the cost of the ferry is the main reason why we don't go every year. For just car and 2 adults from Lymington - Yarmouth was £120. EXTREMELY expensive, but soooo worth it when you get there! It's so beautiful and laid back.

Travelling in the middle of the day midweek is cheaper if you can do that.

I've always found that Red Funnel Ferries are cheaper WightLink. Travel from Southampton to East Cowes, trip takes 55 mintues. Cost for 2 adults and 2 children, one large estate car and long single axle 5 berth caravan approx £160 return, that was travelling Monday to Monday at peak times of day.

I book on the 'saver' terms and have found them to be very flexible if you arrive at the terminal early/late. I've always been allowed to travel on the next ferry and never been asked for any additional payment (this year we arrived 5 minutes before the ferry an hour before we were booked on was leaving, and we were still waved onto the earlier crossing) so no hanging around at the terminal with nothing to do for a an hour! Driving on and off can be a bit nerve wracking as the stewards pack the vehicles in tightly, but they direct you to exactly where they want you to be.

The food on the ferry is okay too, a little expensive, but tasty enough.

You can book on-line through their website, print out the e-ticket and simply drive up and hand it in at the booth on the 'vehicle only' entrance on the terminal, (no need to go into the actual terminal office) they give you a paper (states crossing time and number of passengers) to hang on the rear view mirror and tell you which lane to park in, after that just follow the operators instructions and drive on!

It's a lovely place, we went last year (twice!!) for the first time, again a couple of weeks ago and have every intention of returning next year!

I forgot to say in my earlier post that most sites on IOW seem to offer inclusive deals including the ferry - and several have the inclusive rates on their websites. The conclusion I came to was that trying to book a normal fare yourself was going to be the most expensive way of doing it. And Mozann's post reminds me that when I was looking at fares by inputting dummy journeys on the websites Red Funnel did seem to be cheaper.

I went last year and when I rang to book with Wight Link quoting the discount code from the C&CC I was offered a cheaper deal and I could travel at any time of the day!

Just ring around and check out the deals.

We went to IOW on second saturday in July (kids broke up on the friday). We booked whitecliff bay and cost us £380. This included 4 adults 4x4 car and 6mtr + caravan hook up better pitch and entrance into club on site. My wife and future daughter in law played bingo for a laugh as they had never played before won three times £291 3 nights on the trot they stopped going in case people thoght it was a fix, we caught the 6am ferry and return was 6pm. C&cc was more expensive. Brilliant week had a seafood platter at the Crab & Lobster inn fantastic. The site is a bit commercial but with kids it is very good, the roads on IOW are terrible, potholes everywhere. Overall it is worth a visit - I wish I would have thought of the Tesco vouchers.
