As tenters we are at the thinking about buying a caravan stage, i presume their are makes which are considered better makes as with tents, cars! Can you give me an idea of which makes are best to look at, i know in the end it will come down to layout but a heads up on the rolls royce and the ladas of caravans would be much appriciated, many thanks..
Coachman and eldiss always rate high well built and good finish, but can be heavy beasties, lunar can be a bit basic but lightweight, bailey nice and will sell all day long, it really does depend on what your car can tow what layout ect you want, I have a lunar didn't want one saw her and fell in love with it, had a bailey too nice but not my cuppa, it's all down to personal choice at the end if the day, one mans meat is another mans poison
good luck in your search.

Weight wouldn't be much of a problem for you but as you will be new to caravan towing I would still advise keeping below 85% of your kerb weight - that would allow you up to around 2 tonnes I suspect
------------- Caravanning is a way of getting a cheap holiday out of an expensive hobby
We always think that Elddis and Swift/Sterling are the best affordable caravans, but we would wouldn't we, our last 3 have been these makes. They have various types, from entry level to the more luxurious.
Everyone will think there make is best as they chose it lol, but I agree with RC yep your disco will tow alot but if you gave never towed a van before keep below your 85%
I don't really have a preference and don't worry about makes, if I like the van and it is suitable for us then all well and good, I don't have a clue as to what my next van will be, I will know it when I see it, wether it's a Adria bailey swift lunar to an Ace it's what ticks the boxes for me at the time.

I'm afraid the best make of van is German - 99% of UK vans seem to be made on a Friday afternoon
Other than that you will get a different answer from each poster depending on whatever van they have
Now that sounds right ! If only British goods were all made to the same standard of quality as German ones.
I'd say that anyone suggesting that only one make is any good is being a bit narrrow minded or just plain biased - as another poster said most people will think their one is the best - or just want to say so anyway !
I'd be more inclined to listen to the problems people have had & take all factors into account befor making your own decision. But I think most makes will hab]ve at least some problems and faults.
Probably it's more important to buy from the right seller, one who's proved to have a good track record in putting problems right, and in a reasonable time.

You get what you pay for.The more you pay ,the better the 'van. But this only goes for the quality. The lay out of the most expensive 'van may not be to your liking. If I had enough money to buy the most expensive 'van, I would by a holiday home

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder - the best build may not offer everything you need. We looked at some continental vans but felt that in general they didn't have the interior comfort factor of UK vans & those that did were around £20k+ mark.
For us the Rolls Royce is Coachman & we came within a whisker of buying a brand new one this year but went for our lovely Lunar Quasar instead as our first ever caravan - its definitely not basic though, hard to fault it really. Coachman will probably remain on our hitlist for the future though - I think its the kind of van you buy to keep for years.

IMO though often cheaper things are inferior quality, you don't always get what you pay for. Sometimes you pay more but get no better, or worse still get something that's utter rubbish, just overpriced rubbish that looks fancy.

When we were choosing our caravan, we wanted a fixed bed, and preferably an island bed, after looking around at several dealers, found a lunar lexon 640 with island bed, the make of caravan to be honest didnt even come into the equasion. It ticked all our boxes so thats what we got!
Write out a list of your requirements, and go from there!
I have owned 3 'vans all by different manufacturer's. If we liked the layout then we bought it. First 2 times was from private sellers and the last as it was brand new from a dealer. We had 3 dealers to choose from and 2 of them were almost exclusively Bailey. The other had 2 other makes available. It would have been nice to have seen other makes but to us the dealer we bought from was as important as getting the right price. Our local dealer is very good after the sale whereas you read of so many people whose dealer is great until they have a problem.
Bailey do seem to have more dealers who will just get straight on and repair any problem under warrenty than any other manufacturer so to me that makes Bailey the best but as long as i get a good dealer i would buy from a different manufacturer though i'd prefer to buy British when i can!
