Hello,

I have a scrap Avondale Leda Pentland twin axle caravan which has been parked and generally neglected for over 10 years. It has also recently been vandalised and is now only fit for scrap.

I simply want to be rid of it, but that's where the problem arises. A local scrap merchant quoted £50 to take it away, I agreed but when he arrived he made an excuse about needing a different lorry and drove off never to return.

All four tyres are flat and have perished which makes it very difficult to move. The wheels turn freely when jacked up so no problem with stuck brakes, but even if I replaced the tyres the overall body condition is not safe to tow.

I asked the local council but they just said contact a scrap merchant.

I would appreciate any advice.

Thanks in advance.

Someone where I used to live dumped one on the car park behind my house. I had the very devil of a job getting it taken away, as the local council couldn't move it without the owners' consent (and presumably his money!) LOL. Scrap merchants weren't interested. The local teenies moved in and used as a club house, with resultant noise and police visits... The tyres were flat..

Eventually, a farmer with a tractor came and towed it away for use as a hen house!! You could try a small ad in your local paper - free to a good home, etc.

Also, try an ad on your local freecycle, explaining about the tyres. Someone might want the interior bits for their caravan, or maybe someone might want one as a henhouse - or even a playhouse for the kids! Or a good trailer.... I kid you not, freecycle usually gets a result!

Best of luck to you.

thats a great idea Jax to re-use it as something else and elpecially as the tires are in a state, if you live near farm area it might be best just to offer and see it they know someone to recycle it or even try something like gumtree, you'd be suprised what things you see

Hi had the same problem with our old van, we did consider stripping all the good bits out of it, but my local scrapyard said even if I paid them £150 they still didnt want it.

Stuck it on ebay and it made £261.00 which was good considering I only paid £157.00 18 months ago isnt doing to bad!

Give ebay ago, our van is off to become a kids den now!

Trouble is there is not a lot of scrap in a caravan, a thin skin of aluminium which does have reasonable scrap value, but due to aluminium being light, there is not a lot of it in a caravan. The chassis has a bit of weight, but that being made of steel is not worth a lot. To cap it off, a scrap dealer gets left with a lot of bits of broken wood to dispose of, which is likely to cost as much as he gets for the metal when it gets weighed in.

shame you live so far and it wont tow, looking for a project, but does sound alittle far gone for a rebuild though.

Someone will want it - hen house or trailer conversion etc. Try your local gypsies - they tend to make them into trailers or as suggested ebay etc. Or just stick a for sale sign on it.
