After reading so many horror stories and traumas about new caravans and those under warranty lately, I got to thinking, are they really our pride and JOY.

I put JOY in capitals not really to shout but to ask what really does caravanning mean to us?

I know years ago when we used to have older vans, caravanning was all about the 'holiday' and the things we did, the places we went to and the outdoor life.

Now, and I speak from experience, it sometimes feels like we are more obsessed about the 'caravan' it's self and the whole meaning of the caravan holiday has become secondary to this.

I loved having a new caravan for the first time but was dissapointed by the usual problems that shouldn't be there, and recently with major warranty work having to be done. I don't think I will hurry to have another new one.

A friend of mine sold her new van after a couple of years and bought one about 15 years old, she has never been happier, she doesn't have half the expences of a new van, and she can be more laid back about if it gets knocked or bumped. She says she can enjoy the holiday, without being worried or obsessed about the van.

Just wondered what you thought??

Excellent post - so true!
We too bought a new van after having several second hand ones and have spent far to much time worrying about warranties, servicing and trying not to cause any damage to it, and how relieved we are now that we have decided to sell it and buy a much older Motorhome so we can get back to enjoying the holiday adventures.
I would think twice before buying another new caravan - having said that new cars are just as bad!

After a bad experience with a second hand car, we always buy new now. Yes, it costs more, but we tend to keep our cars a long time. Our previous one we sold in mid 2008 to our postman. It was 14 years old then, we see it every day now and it still looks like new (Volvo 940)

Likewise we have only ever had new caravans and keep them a good time. Our first van we had for 11 years, our second for 10 years, our present is almost 3 years old and still feels new. We plan to keep it for many years.

Our van is 10 months old & I can honestly say it is our pride & joy!  Apart from the clock stopping & the tap in the kitchen sink coming a bit loose we've had no problems at all.  It'll be having it's 1st service early next year but we'd have it serviced no matter how old it was so that's no extra hassle.

It took me a while to feel at home in it - at 1st it just felt 'beige' & like every other caravan out there.  Now we've added some of our own touches (extra cushions/throws etc...) & already had some great holidays with happy memories it feels more like 'ours' & after wandering around all the new vans at the NEC show we came away feeling happy that we already have the best van for us.

How long we keep it will depend on how long DS (nearly 15) keeps coming with us.  At least another 2-3 years tho before we'd be happy to leave him behind with his bog brother.  Maybe then we'll think about whether a different layout or would suit us better.  But until then, we'll enjoy our baby.

We have had old and new caravans and if I were to go down the caravan route again it would be second hand.  When we had the new caravan I was always cleaning it, brushing it, fiddling about with it - it was like a show home - I was always thinking of the resale value if I wanted to sell on!!!.  The older caravans gave us more pleasure as we werent as fussy and were more laid back in them.

Depends what you can afford, if you can easily afford & justify spending £15k its daft to buy a £500 ebay bargain. Having said that, if you just want a 'van to use in't summer & ain't worried about heaters & water heaters etc working, there are plenty of ebay bargains on at moment.

There are actually plenty of dry 'vans about for a few £100s & the good thing about caravan chassis, all parts are available off the shelf right back to mid 80s, so as long as you get the running gear serviced/parts replaced as needed & fit new tyres, its ok to tow down to south France.

Obviously you need to buy with care as if damp has got into the structure of an old 'van it ain't worth buying, but there are plenty of dry ones about, particularly small, low spec models.

I personally could never justify buying new, they lose way too much in the first few years, yes I know you get warranty but odds are you either wont need it or the niggles you have will be things you could fix fairly cheaply.

The cost of depreciation is easily 3-4k in the first 2 years whereas the value of the warranty is probably less than £500 or often nil. I know you'll always get the odd turkey that needs a huge repair but they are the minority, most dealers give you a 3 month warranty anyway so even if you buy 2nd hand you can get any problems sorted for free.

I always find it odd how us caravanners say we have "cheap" holidays but conveniently only think about us paying £15 a night on a site and forget about the insurance, storage, extra diesel & depreciation on our vans.

Athough ive never really been in the situation to buy a new caravan I just couldnt do it even if i wanted..

the main use of my van is accomadation while working away generaly at steam shows where big chunks of black smog and hot ashes land on the roofs,We also tend to be in muddy feilds and i dont think i could relax with £10k+ being dragged in to some of the feilds we have to,

hence the limit of |£1k being spent on my 5/6 berth its clean dry and serves its purpuse i had no worries about fitting a tv bracket or driling a hole to fit the airiel plug when i find a leak i dont panic i just reseal it with what i can lay my hands on

my last caravan i had for a few years it cost me very little and owed me £0 so thats what i sold it for yes £0. so infact i actualy gave it away with a list of faults i knew about and the reasons it was being given away

Car, caravan or anything for that matter is bought to use, so whittling about dings dents and breakdowns or spllages, mud etc is not something we do.  If we can afford it and justify the expense to ourselves we tend to have it.  Major things are always covered insuranceif necessary.

A caravan has always been a way of having extended holidays to us - being fortunate enough to take 5-6 weeks holidays in summer plus the odd weekends in the UK.  We hve always bought nw vans and hve neer been disapoined ina major way

Easiest way to park next to a footpath network, a fell, peak or mountain, on a whim, without having to book months and months in advance, as you do for a cottage, and just get out and enjoy retirement

It's good to hear that those of you who have bought new were not dissapointed, I am not with ours, I love the caravan but not the hassle that goes with it.

Jaysere, werner and......
feeblecat, ..... you get my point, I like how you put it....'fiddling' with it lol.
Yes I feel compelled to keep it washed and clean, (we go away a lot so this is very frequent), we often arrive somewhere and it's dirtier than when we started out so I've wasted my time. Even though I used to wash and look after the older vans, I wasn't so particular.

Inside we have a door mat with another on top and if it's wet or dirty on site I put down an old towel.........

whats all this crazy behaviour about I'm not like this with my home!

If I think about it it must be because I know if it gets worn out or bashed about we are not personally in a position to cast it aside and just go out and change it for another, it has to last us a long time, so I take care of it.

Also....esther,... you too have a point about cheap holidays,
I've seen someone on the forum put's on the bottom of their posts something like.....

caranning is getting a cheap holiday out of an expensive hobby.....How true.

I often wonder if I'd be the same if I had a new caravan. Unfortunately (or should that be fortunately?) I've never had the money for a new van, I have a little old thing which I've refurbished and fixed. Does me fine, and no worries!

Always had new and have never had any problem that has had to go back to the dealer for. Only wash it when we go away and make sure it is clean inside.

Thousand of vans are sold and most people don't have any real trouble. It is only people on forums that publisize their woes!

It isn't a cheap holiday and why should it be? It is an alternative holiday and beats cruising and package tours into a cocked hat IMO.

We have neighbours who go cruising and can't understand why we like being in our caravan. Each to his own I say. I am sure they spend just as much as us and probably more!!!!

We too drag our caravan onto some very poor fields, often muddy with poor access, all to do with our ECWS hobby, as our caravan is our first, it is our pride and definately joy, we have had great breaks/holidays in the yr and half of owning her.

I would feel rather apprehensive of having a new van to do our hobby with and the worry that would go with it would ruin the time away. Toilet/shower, kitchen, bed and heating thats all we need out of our van for a great time as It's only a base.

Ours is new-ish 2009 we are third owners.

It is lovely and been well looked after.
I like it to be comfy and clean and everything working otherwise how can it be a relaxing holiday if the cooker packs up or no hot water.

I would like to keep it as best as we can as it is the nearest we will ever get to a "holiday home". A couple of our friends have bought apartments in Spain, Bulgaria, Cyprus. We could not afford that, and truthfully maybe didn't want to go down that route for our own holiday place.   Beautiful but not without their stresses and things going wrong (leaks etc) and so far away and expensive to put right.

Our caravan is our half-way to that with a couple of bonuses..................

I hope our caravan is a place to relax. I like to keep it clean and tidy so I can do that. Afraid I can't relax with loads of "stuff" crammed into a small space!!

We don't have a mortgage on it.
We don't have to rent it out to afford it.
we don't pay rates, taxes etc
We don't have to get on a plane and queue at airports to get to it.
We can leave our things in it and not have the rigmarole of packing a full case every time we visit.
It has our own finishing touches in it.
It is like taking our own home on holiday anywhere we want to be.

Never done caravanning or camping before except for a few weekends in our campervan. So far I absolutely love it!!

Sites are quiet at this time of year giving us chance to practice setting up, tidying away, towing to storage without an audience lol.

Only downside so far is being in the cold and wet filling up water and emptying loo, but a good coat and gloves solves that one.

Other problem I have is worrying about mice!! I am obsessed with keeping the little bu****s out. I empty all food (even though OH says in the tupperware boxes it would be fine). Clean all crumbs obsessively including the toaster! We have bunged any possible holes up with wire wool and put three trays of mouse killer down.

Other than that I am pretty laid back about mice

We can choose the view and destination on a whim.
Have somewhere comfy and cozy to eat, sleep and wash without being obsessed about cleaning and polishing and tidying. That's what I do at home all year lol!!

My OH says he wants to keep it nice, but not that nice that we daren't kick our shoes off and relax!!
