Hi All

After having our motorhome stolen in September we are now looking at getting a caravan for next year. After buying the motorhome we discovered some damp and are keen to avoid a repeat with the caravan. What I would like some info on is using a damp meter. I have one with nice sharp points but I can't see the owners being too happy about me making lots of little holes all over their van. Or do you only use it in out of sight places like below benches etc ? Do you just go by feel around the windows ? Is it worth while buying a expensive meter ? Any tips most welcome

                    regards sf

I'm no expert but, if you slightly lift the window surround rubber you can get pretty close in under a window and not leave visible marks. If the van is sound it will be difficult to push the probes in and will not leave much of an impression. If soft they will go straight through!

If you buy a protimeter you will get a more accurate idea of any damp issues. The cheaper ones can over or under read - under and you could buy a damp one - over and you could turn down a good'un. I have a cheap one but intend getting a protimeter.

Cheers,

A.

The one I have is from B & Q and you dont need to push the pins into the wall, just touch it to the surface and you'll get an audio warning. Its really good for amusing the Grandchildren too by touching their heads with it to see how much moisture they have!!!

Sounds like fun, but how can it tell what is the other side of a waterproof wallboard membrane? I think you have to pay serious dosh for one that can do that accurately.

Yes you do! You need to push the spikes through the wallcovering to get to the structure underneath. If you don't do this all you're doing is measuring the moisture on the surface of the wallboard. I bet your 'van hasn't shown any damp on your meter. (Don't push the spikes through your grandchildren's heads, they don't like it!)

Push the spikes through the caravan wallboard at the places shown in this diagram;
Damp Testing
Make sure the owner is with you and is happy for you to do the testing (if not, walk away), the owner could agree to push the meter into the walls for you to avoid any arguement. Test in unobtrusive areas like behind the window rubbers, in lockers and cupboards. Don't stick the spikes in the middle of a panel or anywhere the holes will show otherwise you might feel a sharp pain on the end of your nose!

Hope this helps

Hi

After damp problems in 2 previous 'vans and on the advice of a caravan engineer I bought a Protimeter mini new from an internet dealer. This is the meter used by many caravan service centres. It cost about £200 but I had lost more than that in damp problems. It means that I can check the 'van as often as I want.

When damp was found in our present 'van at its second year annual service it was resealed under warranty by a Bailey service centre but I was advised to use a heater inside the 'van too. The Protimeter enabled me to monitor the situation and check that the reseal had been effective.

I regularly check the 'van with the Protimeter mini for my own peace of mind, ie, any damp would be identified at an early stage. I try to use the prongs in out-of-sight places - under the window rubbers, in cupboards, under the bed boxes, etc. The Protimeter comes with a lead with "remote" prongs which make it easier to use in hidden places.

Before I bought my own Protimeter I did hire one on a few occasions from a local hire shop. I, however, decide that it in the long run it would be cheaper to purchase my own!!

I hope this helps.

Tim

Certainly no need to pierce walls with the B & Q meter.  It works very well and certainly howls like mad if anything is really wet below the surface.  Ticks slowly with minor surface dampness.

It might not be too sophisticated but for a non-professional who just wants to watch for early signs of water ingress or check out a prospective purchase it's all you would need in my opinion.

They don't sell 'em anymore. Tried to buy one a couple of months ago. No stock anywhere. Delisted.

Cheers,

A.

Hi Tarry

I hired it from Harlow Hire in St Helens. Other hire companies hire them out too as they are widely used in checking building timbers and not just caravans!!

I don't know your location but here is a link for HSS hire who, also, hire out the Protimeter. I think HSS is a national chain and so there should be a branch near you.

http://www.hss.com/index.php?g=49420#PricingTitle

Incidentally the current internet price to buy one is approx £140 including VAT.

I hope this helps.
Tim

Quite correct. Its a great piece of kit. I've used it on a number of vans and it squeels like crazy if there's anything there. Only a very gentle ' tick ' for surface moisture.

Sorry to hear they dont make them any more.
