If money is a problem, you really don't need it.  Just think what people did before motor movers existed. I've managaed very well without for over 40 years.

I can hardly walk these days, but we don't move the caravan a single inch by hand.  That's what the tow car is for.

If reversing is a problem, just get some practice.  It's not that hard.

Just take your time, and think about what you're doing before you move.  Try to use your mirrors instead of looking over your shoulder.  You will see how easy it is after a while.  One day it will suddenly click, and after that you won't even think about it.

Well for us a motormover is a must, without one our caravanning days would be over due to health reasons, we both suffer with back problems amoungst other things, so the £825 fully fitted cost of our Reich mover was money well spent, and easily recouped on what we saved on storage fees. There was no way we would have been able to get the caravan onto the drive at home without the mover, as its a bit of a tight space on a fairly busy road.

You can buy a new mover from either towsure or Riversway Leisure ( and probably one or two other places ) for less than £500 and then you either fit it yourself ( not rocket science but not everyones cup of tea ) or get a mobile fitter to do it for you something which should cost less than £100.

If you can back up to a single axle, you should be able to back up to a twin. That's what we have.  There's no way I could move it by hand, even slightly. (those were the days!) I just back up under the ball and drop it on.  My wife has learned to give good directions, and no adjustment is needed.

I wouldn't have my caravan on the drive anyway.  I used to, until the Police pointed out how useful it was to burglars to know when I was away.  I took it to storage that week.

I love mine, cost £699 fitted in Doncaster. I found them on Ebay.

Its great at everything but it isnt really keen on muddy hills, but then again I dont think any of them are.

Geoff, I'm not talking about 3 to 6 inches away.  I mean exactly under the hitch.You absolutely don't need to move the caravan at all.  The hitch just drops on to the ball. If you're within 5mm or so, it will just go straight on.  I have to say I would be disappointed to be 5mm out.

If you get used to the sight picture in your mirrors when the caravan is hitched, you can back up to the caravan more or less correctly, then get directions for the last foot.  I don't let my wife say right or left, she comes up to the drivers window, and might say something like " You need to be 1 inch to the right, over a distance of a foot".

It never takes more than two attempts.  Well worth persevering.

People are always emptying their boots of the junk that accunulates, but they will happily drag around many kilos of weight in the shape of a motor mover. What that will do to the mpg would buy you a nice pub lunch.  Also, of course, it's a chunk off your weight allowance right away, and could cause noseweight problems.

If they were essential, they would be fitted from new.

We used to have a boat hire company, still have a Seamaster 27 on the Lancaster canal.
