What is everyones opinion. Do caravaners use melamine sets or crockery. I worry that using 'pot' may cause breakages whilst in transit, any suggestions or advice gratefully received.
i have brought royal melamine classic set for £9.99, have put two mugs from home as i prefer to drink out of a ceramic mug. glasses ive seen some nice plastic ones in m and s that i might get.

Started 'vanning 6 months ago with melamine and plastic glasses (proper cutlery though). Well naff! Plus melamine stains really badly. Think if you're not desperately keeping weight down and are good at packing go for the real mccoy.
Cheap light "china"; there is something just not right with Melamine, too similar to a cheap picnic set.
But then we take dining properly as opposed to snacking, as very much a part of caravanning.
I have a set of good melamine, and clear plastic wine glasses and tumblers. We also have a set of Rainbow melamine mugs which have been great and not stained.. I guess it's down to personal choice. We also eat proper meals and dont live on "snacks" while on holiday, as Im sure do most families.
You can find great retro melamine/melawear on fleabay, which is probably better quality than alot of the cheap plastic dining sets you can buy today. As I say, its purely a matter of what you like and what suits you and your family.
We use melamine - we bought a very cheap but matching & light picnic set when tenting but for some reason now we have the storage in the caravan it seems right to upgrade to the thicker melamine sets we've seen in discover and because now the children are a bit older we can all share the same set rather than child orientated bowls and plates. I'd prefer crockery but I'd worry every journey about a chip or breakage - we do however have large proper mugs I didn't like how the tea 'hung' off the melamine!
Melamine for us - but we use real wine and beer glasses. Incidentally, we always keep steradent tablets in the van - clean stains of melamine v (especially tea and coffee stains).
To be honest I don't see the difference, food & drink tastes the same plus it's lighter & wont break or cause dents if it falls from the cupboars onto the worktop.
Only thing you can't do it put it in the microwave.
We have a good set of melamine bought over ten years ago when we were tenting it was expenisve then at £42.00 for a four place setting but it still looks like new we also eat proper meals and its not stained.
We have a set of melamine that must date back to the 1970s - it came with our old folding camper when we bought it secondhand in 1985 and has been used in every outfit we have owned since. We don't like drinking out of melamine - it does seem to effect the taste - so we have Arcopal mugs (a bit like Pyrex) and Arcoroc glasses, bought in French hypermarkets. This seems to give us the best of both worlds!
