When cleaning a caravan the hardest part is the roof. Does everyone clean their roofs? Is there a necessity to do so?
The van is stored on a slope and makes cleaning it on a stepladder a bit precarious. I want to keep it covered for most of the time and just want to clean it from time to time to keep grit from scratching it. If I didn't have to do the roof it would be a lot easier.

I think the van roof must be cleaned at least once a year. If you want to put a cover over it, remember that even slight wind movement (the environment, that is ) will cause scratching if the roof surface is 'gritty'. I think cover manufacturers all advise cleaning before fitting the cover.
Also, once some residue has become firmly deposited, the addition of more dirt will settle more quickly. This would eventually cause algae growth, which might gradually eat into the surface finish.
I would think making a safe, level platform (plywood?) for the steps should be fairly simple. One tip I did get from a caravanner: have the van sloping during washing down the roof, to allow water, and the muck along with it, to flow off the end of the van.
Bertie.

Once a year doesn't sound too bad and the van is pointing up the slope.

OH cleans ours after every trip including the roof - in fact he's doing it right now! Mind you as 2 tops says we cover it so we wouldn't want the cover rubbing on any gritty bits.

Through the sunroof sounds a good and safe way.

Thats clever Jusy, but supposing you have no sunroof on your roof. Also do not birds muck damage the roof so it should be cleaned at times.Supposing you were only to use a garden hose providing the water pressure can take it would that get rid of some especially if the water is going to run off a slanted roof. Not ours by the way.But Brians. But what about birds muck?

If you do not clean it and it rains all the muck from the top of the van pours down and dirties the sides of your newly cleaned van. I clean my van top and all each time I go away.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

One or two on our site clean the roof by opening their large sunroof like yours Brian and use telescopic brushes, also a waterless cleaner polish, one for on,another for off..

Anyone got any good tips on getting the rooflight clean? I think ours must've been on a seasonal or under a tree before we had it & it's got tiny dots on it (I presume sap), we've tried all sorts of cleaners but none of them get it really clean.

I was reading an article only recently about keeping the caravan clean. The answer was the skin on a caravan is very much like human skin and needs to breath and if not cleaned on a regular basis it can lead to algea build up which then attracts damp when it rains which in turn can lead to other problems. I cleaned mine yesterday for the very first time since I purchased it last November which is 4 months on. I knew the caravan was dirty and desperately needed a clean but when I went up the ladder to clean the roof, OMG it was absolutely filthy. It took me about an hour just to clean the roof alone removing bird lime, algea which had ground into all the nooks & crannies and clean the ground in dirt. Obviously I don't know when the caravan roof was last cleaned but I think that the roof needs to be done at least twice a year preferable at the beginning and the end of the season. If you you can fit it more often then it's not going to do any harm but will reap the benefits of keeping the ground in muck and dirt at bay.

I have decided that I will give the whole van a clean when I next have time. I don't suppose it matters if it rains as it is going to be wet anyway. As the van is next to a tree I will probably keep a cover on most of the year.
Thanks everone

Hi, I clean roof twice a year, more if needed, cleaned it at end of last season, didnt get round to putting cover on, Now will need to clean all the algea, and black streaks from van, have a platform ladder and 3foot wall to assist with the hight when doing the roof.
------------- If everything runs smoothly then I must have done something wrong
