obviously you don't live in the county.  nothumberland is the big county 'up north'

east of the a19 at castle eden on the wingate side of the a19 is quite specific     perhaps if you google map the area for yourself you will see it      let us know how you get on

Thanks for ther replies. I did use my computer and google but got nowhere. That's why I thought I'd ask the helpful people on this forum. When I asked for weighbridges in the Durham area that's what I wanted. I live in Durham city. Had I meant the whole county I would have said so.

I'll try contacting the council or trading standards. I've managed to find the location of the one at Castle Eden, just need to know whether we just turn up.

You just turn up at a public weighbridge, your council should be able to provide you with locations & opening times.

A local quarry or gravel pit should also be able to weigh your unit for you. We often get vehicles coming in to be weighed. I think it'll cost you about £7 on a public weighbridge, the cost may vary & you might just get lucky & have a free weigh unless you require a ticket showing the weights.

If you elect to weigh at a quarry bridge, I suggest you go in the afternoon, they tend to be very busy places in the mornings & quieten down after lunch.

Hi, I took my van to public weigh bridge it was in Livingston, they closed it down as they would not upgrade it to digital,Found one only one mile away(Not Public) charged £10 but mandatory ticket, I weight my van when totaly unloaded, weighed all items individualy,Made list of all weights,of all caravan accessories, Then used spread sheat to calculate all weights,(Only have 900k max ). This may give you idea some idea. you can extend it to include the total weight of car and van,to say within the Max Permited Train Load of both vehicles combined.

I've also started a spreadsheet for the weights of individual items but would like to weigh the loaded caravan just to confirm that we're OK.

Incidentally, John, factory fitted items such as the fridge, gas fire and upholstery are included in the caravan's unladen weight. 

Well we finally went to the weighbridge at Castle Eden yesterday. The guys from Trading Standards are there on the 1st Wednesday of each month and were very helpful.

We were a little surprised that the caravan weighed in at 7kg overweight. It was fully packed except for clothes but that would obviously take us more over the limit. It just goes to show how easy it is to overload as we feel that we don't take a lot of equipment with us. We have no TV, satellite dish etc.

Anyway, by moving items we normally carry in the 'van such as chairs, table, small cadac and porch awning to the car we'll be fine.

The weighbridge is open 24 hours a day for self weigh so I think we may pop in again sometime if we're headed in that direction.

Is the weighbridge definitly open every day?  We live in Tyne and Wear and want to weigh the van, but don't want to hitch up and drive down if it is going to be closed.  I have sent Durham council a couple of emails but haven't had any reply.
