I was chatting the other day to someone whose parents had worked as wardens at a variety of different Caravan Club sites. Their feedback was that many (although not all) of the Caravan Club sites are not really child friendly and are more geared towards older adults. Do you think this is fair or not?

I suppose they need to cater for every one. Some people like the peace and tranquility. Although leaning to favor one over the other is not fair. I am sure they have plenty of sites listed that are child friendly.

From my observations of Caravan Club sites is that they have invested a lot of money in recent years in play areas for younger children but perhaps not so much for older children. There are a few sites with kick about areas but they are few and far between. Some of the more recent site acquisitions also have swimming pools although not many! If the OP means can children run around the site uncontrolled making a nuisance of themselves then I expect not

I think the key is which sites you visit with kids. Both of ours, now in their late teens, have grown up with us using Caravan Club sites and have loved them. Blackwall Plantation, Pembrey Country Park, Park Coppice etc have proved to be firm family favourites. They have always made friends easily and usually end up just playing amongst themselves. You don't actually need massive play-parks to keep kids occupied and happy! They've loved playing in the woods and areas around the sites.
However, there are sites on the network that we've loved and the kids haven't been so keen on, so I guess you pays yer money and you takes yer choice.
Pete.

We're using a Caravan Club site for the 1st time for our main hol this year.  We've shied away from them before as we worried about them being child friendly.  But the one we've booked has a playground & we figured if they didn't want to encourage families they wouldn't have that.

A site could be viewed as child friendly by one person & a nightmare by the next.  Our kids aren't perfect by a long shot but I'd be mortified if I thought they were spoiling someone else's holiday so we make sure we know where they are & what they're doing.  So, I'm hoping they'll be able to enjoy themselves without being disapproved of on a CC site.

This is one of these situations that has been talked about for years. The best answer I have seen so far is to read the reviews for the site you are planning to visit.

We rather like the layout of the Sandringham CC site, its a bit of a figure of 8 shape, and the top area is near to the play park and tends to attract all those with young children who prefare to be near to this facility. there is also a shower block and toilets that serve the pitches at that end of the site as well as a laundry and pot washing area.

The bottom part of the site is quieter and further away from the hustle and bussel of youngsters playing, and tends to attract the more mature age groups, is flatter and easier on the feet for the less mobile and has a shower block which contains good disabled facilities.

So really you do get the best of both worlds there depending on your needs.

I am not sure what people mean by child friendly--CC sites do not have special rooms full of flashing, beeping machines aimed at taking money from the kids(or their parents) or a constant suply of chips, but most have a play area with equipment, wooded areas are common, no problem with space to run around, cycle, skooter etc.  Children dont have to be entertained every waking minute, and club sites are a great place for them to make friends and revive the art of entertaining themselves. I have used the club sites for years and have never heard complaints about children eccept on the rare occasion of particularly unruly visitors.  I suppose we all have different views of what is child friendly!

do not agree really we use both clubs and never have a problem with children or grandchildren being with us on our holiday.have seen members turning there nose up at the site of children on site.it is only my observation but i think the play area is too small on most sites of both clubs,ie.a small football field with high fence away from caravans.placing the play area in the centre of caravans is asking for trouble.(blackpool)  little lads want to play football and they cannot.i agree with the the no ball game on site policy.we always take ours somewhere they can play without worry.there are also adult only sites.

Caravan Club site are caravan sites first and foremost - they offer great facilities for caravanning. They are not "family holiday entertainment parks", and neither should they try to be. Every extra facility adds extra costs in terms of maintenance and equipment costs.

We've been to two CC sites - West Ayton is fantastic for those with children but there are quieter areas of the site as well. West Ayton has two play areas, wooded areas to play in and a massive field with a pool room and huge wooden assault course on it. Edinburgh has a very small play area and that's about it. Unfortunately someone at Edinburgh did decide to put a massive sand pit next to the kids play area - and then put a sign up saying boules area - no unaccompanied children! Talk about putting temptation in their way!! No one used the boules area in the week we were there and you could see the kids eyeing it up all the time!

I think it depends on the site and the wardens maybe!

its not the club but the site owners who decide children or not.

I for one don’t wish the club house and lights and spend spend spend system. Children can and do make friends easy far more so than adults. and need so very little.

its the sue and blame claim life that we have become that makes folk say sod it its not worth it, how many pubs have to get rid of garden items because they don’t confirm to Insurance regs, its the same with sites.

one site we use has quite often a solo camper chap. he just likes to rest and chill, he also likes to see children happy and does magic tricks for them and balloon modelling for free, yet you can see parents telling their children no! when they want to go and be with other children to see him.

we have become a society of two types (in general) those who don’t control their children and seek a row with anyone who (like myself) tells a child or youth off when they are doing wrong. (If they are doing wrong and they know it “spitting swearing breaking or just being a pest they know it)  with the right approach they will comply. All children want to be liked and accepted, they don’t want too many rules though. We never did so why should they. And then there are those who keep their children on a very tight leash that binds them and makes them in turn, cautious and insular.

Blame and Claim is at the root of the problem. its a insidious cancer that has crept into our lives from the USA and the sooner its gone the better. then we can return to a place that’s glad to accept all types. and allow and accept them.

For both those with children, and those who haven’t and don’t wish to be around and even those who are less fortunate. too many times those with disabled children are made to feel awkward by folk seeing and finding an excuses not to be near. Also several write on here how to keep their children quiet when the awake in the morning for fear of upsetting other campers!

as it was once said The Greatest Sound is the Sound of Children’s Laughter

The greater demand is what most site owners go for and alas it’s the Trilby and Cardigan mob that the CC clubs attract that have the greater voice. But it is changing and will do more so. And a good thing too. But also parents need to stop being so precious towards their children and more considerate to others by taking charge of their charges. Rather than “there’s a play area go away and give me rest at all costs.

plenty of choice in sites but its the (Benidorn) type that take up caravan and camping who ruin it for the greater. sites seek to make money and at present the choice is limited, its either whistle and bells or basic thats to be had.  one day it will be perfect but until then its what we have got.

I did a reccy of a CC site last week which was close to where I was working at the time. I was immediately made quite uncomfortable upon pulling up to the wardens place/hut having been met by a scowling 'can I help you?' as if I'd taken a wrong turn and wasn't meant to be there. I introduced myself politely and said as I was working in the area I had just come to have a look as I was considering staying there in the near future to this still quite perplexed looking elderly gent.

He went off into his little shed and got a site plan and a brochure and said it was ok to have a look around, but also asked who I was looking around for again, "you've come to look for your parents?". It was a bit like he was implying that this sites not for you son, it's for the older ones. That's the impression I got at least. Shame as the prices are a lot more reasonable at £10pn against the other sites in the area at circa £25-30pn.

yep ! thats what the land owners in this area are like four diff sites all the same aloof attitude towards people not in their "gang" have had one shouting at me as I drove in and thru on a agricultural track/road that goes through the area. told them very politly that I was having a look at the site and location.as I was passing. and that also its a Bye Road anyway. was told we are full and this is private land please leave.

place was empty with the exception of three units on around 15 pitches. I tend to think its a case of having your cake and eating it. they want only their own type. fair enough its their choice but why put up Caravan and Campsite signs for all to view ???
