Looking at the Bailey Olympus vans in particular the 504 (the other models don`t have this layout) and wondered if Bailey had sorted the Alu-tech problems yet?.. These vans must be coming up for their first service now does it cost an arm and a leg with the torque tightening etc?

Alu-tech problems? What problems do you mean. The only problems I've heard of have been with some owners getting stone chip markings on the front of their vans - a problem which seems to be as much about the towcar as it does about the van, and which has been remedied in any case. As for costs of servicing, they do cost more for the first three years
Year 1: Standard caravan service at £150

they are largely sorted now i believe. several owners of early pegasus models had serious issues such as manufacturing damage botched up with filler and paint , poorly vented gas flues on the fridge and many many less serious (but damn annoying) trim issues.
i know of one olympus owner who rejected his van due to 50+ faults , again, an early example.
the stone chip problem is much less severe due to the protection fitted below window level , although ive seen vans with dents at the side of the front windows where theres no protection.
Viggo is correct with the servicing schedule / price , expensive for the first 3 years but once youve seen that through same as any other van and safe in the knowledge youve got 7 years left where the van will be sorted should it leak.....worth the extra for peace of mind i reckon if you plan on keeping your van long term.
Noseweight issues are not just restricted to Bailey models.
If you car has less than 100kg noseweight limit, it may be recommended to avoid the optional chest (agreed this is not possible in the Unicorn range).
We have an optional chest in our Pegasus 524 yet are still able to keep our noseweight under 100kg. Re gas, we have one large & one small BP light gas bottle.
Max NW for Bailey vans is 100 according to their handbook.Alko say chassis max is 100. When I collected van with mover NW was 100. The dealer weighed another without mover and it was 98.It is hard to safeley meet 100 max with 2 lightweight gas bottles in hood.My car is ok at 130 as is the tow bar. The NW you should have is the lower of these ie 100. The chest is fitted as standard in Valencia .The van tows well and otherwise it is superb. I am still trying to work it all out - the weight issue. Bailey came up with a few daft suggestions iwont waste your time on.At present I can only think of carrying gas in the car but it sounds a dangerous option.
No the battery was not fitted at the time. Although it is behinnd the axle it is fairly close so it will have only a small effect on NW compared to the gas bottles which are well away from the axle very close to the tow hitch. The wardrobe is behind just the axle and is probably balanced by the fridge.
Perhaps the problem with the Unicorns is that they use the same hard points as the Pegasus, but all the heavier furniture is forward of the axle, the bed boxes are probably identical.
We find our's tows superbly with our lightweight furniture under the fixed bed, with a 92kg noseweight.
Gasman Steve, when we looked at the 504 at the NEC show back at the launch, one issue we felt was that it lost the storage area under the bed. If that is not an issue to you then it sounds like a good layout.
Thanks for the replies everyone. Yes we like the layout of the 504 which is the same as the Swift Charisma 546 (I think) and the Sterling Europa 546 (I think again, see so many models ) . We like the finish of the Challengers and Conquerors but they don`t do that layout. A dealer (not a Bailey dealer??) told me that Bailey had stopped production for a while because of problems (?) with the Alu-tech system,damp etc maybe not so can`t say I trust any of them any more??

With the number of Alutech vans on the road, they can't have stopped production (apart from their seasonal shutdown) for that long!!!! Sounds a bit fishy to me.
They may have had a slight pause as they swapped their whole production to Alutech from mix of conventional & Alutech. My feeling it is sour grapes from the other dealer.
