Well I'm absoutely gutted to say I've just found water seeping into our new to us 2005 Pageant Bordeaux. We've not had it a month yet and bought from Baileys biggest dealer, it came with a full service history and luckily a 12 month warranty.

Yesterday I noticed a small area of what looks like mould on the wooden ledge under the left hand side front window. On closer examination today when you run your finger along the point between the wallboard and the ledge its wet!! I pulled the curtain along (that sits between the windows) to discover an 8 inch thin layer of clear mastic and the water is coming in either side of this. I'm so upset. I've just got off the phone from the dealer who want us to ring the after sales dept on Monday and book it in for them to have a look. We're off first thing Monday for a supposed stress free weeks break in Corfu and now we're going to have this hanging over us. Tried to get them to book it in for when we get back but they wont as say diary in locked workshop. So, FIL will be onto them on our behalf first thing Monday morning. Hopefully he can get it booked in for the week we get back. I'm very upset and cant believe we didnt notice this area of mastic (only part of the van with it) but think it adds to our case that this must have been an existing problem. We didnt see the damp report when we bought it, just the full service history and they assured us they had too much at stake reputation wise to sell a damp van.

I'm now worried the front panel is damp as this looks like a pre existing problem for someone to have applied mastic. Looking at our warranty we're covered but I'm also going to insist they damp test the entire van in our presence for peace of mind. We were so happy with the van, I've had the most awful year so far and now for this to happen I could cry.

As a total novice to caravans, where could the water be coming in from?

Hi, sorry to hear that but look on the bright side it's covered by warranty so will save you thousands. It's probably coming in from a rubber seal maybe the front window if not then a piece of the metal trim that runs along the roof joints.

Sounds like the dealer has tried to botch it up and hope you don't notice. I'd have been there first thing this morning making a lot of noise ensuring any potential customer is aware that they have tried to scam their customers. They will bend over backwards to make you happy if they think it could cost a few sales on a sunny weekend.

Personally, I'd be looking for a full refund and shop elsewhere. If they have tried to botch it up once, the chances are they will botch it up again and hope it holds out until the warranty expires.

The only defence they may have is that they did not spot it, but if they do make that claim ask exactly what they were doing when they SHOULD have been doing the PDI. I suspect they did do a damp check during the PDI and found the problem, squirted some sealer in it and hoped you wouldn't notice. Henceforth you received no damp report.

Hopefully they will do their duty. It may just have been one staff member who fancied an early finish and didn't do a very thorough PDI.

they sold the van new and have serviced it every year since. OH and FIL maintain and install the telephone system for Bailey in Bristol and if we dont get things sorted will be speaking to Baileys MD (who they are on excellent terms with).

I did think about going down there but tbh whats that going to achieve. We want them on our side. I've spent the last six months suffering from severe depression and anxiety and the caravan was one of the ways we hoped to get out and about more to aid my recovery. I havent got it on me at the minute to fight anyone and this is the last thing we need.

They say they have the damp test reports they will show us, I dont think they bodged it, well I hope they havent. With regards to getting our money back I dont know where we stand on that one.

I always find you can sort things out better face to face. Potential customers don't hear your telephone conversation on the telephone. If you talk to them in the showroom, there is always the chance a potential customer will overhear so they want to sort it out quickly and let potential customers see you walk away happy.

The threat of a chat to the Bailey MD may well shed a different light on matters, they certainly wouldn't want their relationship with their main supplier to sour. Having said that, Bailey would probably not be too keen on souring relations with one of their main outlets either.

I would hold back on the relationship with Bailey at first. They may see that as blackmail and call your bluff by telling you to go get Bailey to fix it.

Hi savanne1, Gutted for you, I now take what any sale person says, with a pinch of salt, hopefully it is only a bad window seal, you could have a look around the window seals,to see if any of them are damaged, check rail above window (if you have one there) and the awning rail, and hopefully its not to bad, if you have Phil on the case with the dealer, you should get a satisfactory out come, try not it let it spoil your holiday. good luck.

just been outside and looking at the window nearest the van it dosent sit flush to the van like the rest on the one side nearest the leak.

If we decide to mention the Bailey MD or not the warranty clearly states we are covered.

Wondering now if it would be worth getting an independent damp test before we take the van back to them.

http://www.bailey-caravans.co.uk/retailer-network/uk-network/

if it was a bailey dealer it should have had a 32 point check including damp report.you can ask for your money back or a caravan change as it is not fit for use or insist on a full repair with a warranty.if it was me i would contact bailey and let them sort it for you as the service received has not been forthcoming from the dealer.

yep the window nearest the leak is definetly not sitting flush to the van (compared it with the one the other side iyswim). We love the van, the layout is perfect but I do wonder did they do any of the checks despite stamping the service book and doing a PDI.

Michael, can we just go and ask for our money back or are we obliged to let the dealer try and fix it? Think we're going to go down there tommorrow and talk to them.

yes you can just say it is not fit for use under the law and ask for your money returned in full.it has not got to that damp stage in 4 weeks.

really frustrating as OH on the second day of his towing course tommorrow or we'd go down there (although we could go in the afternoon as towing finishes at 12 tom). We had a mover fitted on the van so if we ask for our money back what happens with the mover? So fed up beginning to wonder why we even bothered. 8K is alot of money to be sat with a leaky van.

Michael, we know its leaking but dont know its damp. Will insist on seeing damp test report tommorrow and see what they have to say. I just want to know who did the mastic job and when. They sold the van new to people local and serviced it every year. Cant believe the owner would have done the mastic so it has to be the dealer.

when they took it in part exchange they will have done a damp report for themselves so they know how much to offer.and if damp a lower price would follow.

Your consumer rights

When you buy an item from a trader (eg a shop or online shop) the law says the item must be:

  • of satisfactory quality – last for the time you would expect it to and be free of any defects
  • fit for purpose – fit for the use described and any specific use you made clear to the trader
  • as described – match the description on packaging or what the trader told you

If an item doesn’t meet any of these rights, it is faulty and you will usually have the right to a:

  • repair
  • replacement
  • refund
