M6 north, then M74 to Glasgow then across to Edinburgh. Bit further but motorway all the way.

Personally I'd avoid the M1 as it becomes the A1 which is single carriageway for a considerable distance, so takes forever.

The M74 is now motorway all the way it opened yesterday and would be the quickest rout

Or turn off onto the A7 at Carlisle to Hawick Galashiels then Edinburgh thats if your not in a hurry.

were going to kirkcaldy but  have to cross over from glassgow toward edinburgh to get over the road bridge.  its the cross over we dont like we have done motorway crossing and the cenict rouit thanks to last years nutty sat nav that sent us of  at moffitt heading for Edinburgh lol.

   yep were towing the caravan.

speeds not an issue if its a nice drive on the A1 as captin slows driving so its allway 55mph maxs

the drive up the m6 and m74 ok but its the bit at the top  that we dont like

The drive up the A1 North of Newcastle is fine, but from Bury across to the M is not the greatest drive and the A1 ( A1M ) going north up to newcastle is a real bore. From Rochdale I would choose M61, M6 M74 to Abington and then across to Edinburgh on the A702 then around the Edinburgh ring road to the Forth Road Bridge. The A702 is not as quick to drive along as the A1 but it is no problem at all anywhere. From Bury going up tot the M8 and acros is 261miles, using the A702 is  243miles and using the A1 is 293 miles to Kirkaldy.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

Nope. Deffo dont go near Edinburgh

M74
Keep going To Glasgow
Filter Glasgow city centre /Stirling
Head towards Stirling A80 (Road works for about 5 miles 40 MPH absolutley no hold ups just 40mph) Carry on towards Stirling, Filter for Kincardine Bridge follow the motor way. Then cross over Kincardine to Fife and onwards to Dunfermilne and then Kirkaldy. There is No need to go near the forth road bridge and Edinburgh.

I live here and this is the route I would use every time

If you travel via the M1/A1 you will add approx 70miles onto your journey.

Can't advise as to the best way, but I would also do the M6 M74 M8 route, simply because it's quicker...

they have those little Goblin pudiings your daughter is fond of at our local Home and Bargains store! Two for a pound, thought I'd let you know in case they've gone scarce again!

We go up to Scotland quite a lot - we have a lot of family in Aberdeen, and one or two in the Dunfermline area.

We are starting from South Yorkshire and we always used to go up the A1, but we were told that the A74 was the better option and it most definitely is.

So from South Yorkshire, we go up the A1, A66, A74.

If you're in Lancashire, I can't see any point in crossing the country down south, we've even used the A1 all the way in recent years for a change, it takes far longer.

Vince

P.S. I'll be heading that way again soon, a week nr Edinburgh and a week nr Aberdeen - and we've now got a trailer so we can take more gear

We live about 12 miles from Kirkcaldy and like OP we don't like the M8 bit of a journey. We always leave the M74 at Abington and take the A702 through Biggar then the Edinburgh ByPass to Forth Bridge. Continue on M90 to junction 2A and join the dual carriageway A92 to Kirkcaldy. There are two exits from A92 - first is Kirkcaldy West and second is Kirkcaldy East.

The only downside is that the A702 whilst scenic can be slow if there are many heavies.

We came back from Blackpool CC site yesterday using this route with no problems. Average speed for 213 miles was 50MPH.

Hope this helps,
Jim
