To cut a long story short I was wondering if I need the leisure battery. We always stay on a site with electric hook up. Does it just run the fridge during the journey and would there be enough charge coming from the car if the battery was on its last legs?
Even on hook up? The pump has been working fine. Checked the battery the other day and it took a litre of deionised water to top up.The battery is 5 years old now.
If it took that amount of water to replenish the battery it's probably had it's day anyway. Not sure if you need a battery for the 12 volt fridge operation though, I'm sure someone will be along shortly with some electrical experience who can offer advice on this.
My van does not need a battery as it has a transformer not a charger. This operates all 12v and 240v whilst on ehu. But I engage the battery when not hooked up or using the mover,
------------- live for today as tomorrow ma never come.
Thanks for the replies. I'll refit the battery tomorrow after a charge overnight and see what the voltmeter on the van reads. From andyandLynd's reply it will be safer this way to compete the circuit. Not sure whether we have a transformer or not. Van is a 2010 Olympus.
If your battery is knacked it might over heat when it is charged by the van,and it could explode i would advise you to get a new batt as you might over load the transformer.A van of that age will probably have a transformer and it will charge the battery automatic.
I had a problem David of not using a battery,i found that the charging needle was going crazy jumping from 0 to say over 15volts.Also the blow heating was not steady and there was a clicking noise coming from the carver fire.Seemed that when you put on the lights at night and other things that worked on 12v it took to much power from the transformer and it was trying to find extra power.I fitted a new battery and all is well now,on a last note i would advise all those who have not got a battery fitted to check the battery power needle to see if it is jumping.

That's useful information Jeff. Personally I have always had a battery fitted, and now I have to anyway because of the mover. I just seem to remember someone saying to me some years ago that it doesn't do the electrical system any good to run it without a battery - can't remember who said it or in what context. So I'm glad that your post almost confirms that 'folksy' information that I have in the back of my mind.
ild tend to agree with jeff here. no you dont need one BUT without one the equipment that you normally use on 12v may work but is it working correctly.i'ld say have one connected anyway wether its holding a charge or not.just keep an eye on the over heating of it.
i'ld be looking at nipping battery into local garage that does free tests on batterys just to see if its ok.if not then for the sake of less than £100 its well worth getting a new one.the last thing you want is the possitive and negative touching during transit and arcing out just because you didnt fit a battery

I'd agree too. For what it's worth, better safe than sorry.
Hi , We have an Adria Altea which has just a transformer (no charger), We have a battery fitted for the mover and when not on EHU, we can operate all 12v appliances, no problems. When on EHU, we have no need of the battery and therefore just remove the cables from the +ve terminal. Again all 12v appliances work how they should with no problems as do the 230v.
I have heard that some newer caravans do indeed need the battery connected for the supply unit and charger to work correctly, but somebody no doubt will confirm this.

And any 12v lights.
Your old battery will be completing the circuit so they can run, when on EHu the power just runs through the circuit on some vans. Yes, they are liable to overheat though. Best safe than sorry, get a new one, even if only 65-80 amps.
when on EHU the PSU in most caravans will supply 12v for all the vans requirments without a battery fitted, but as said the psu will only supply a finate amperage,20amp I think but this would have to be checked out.so if you are using more than this you could cause trouble with the PSU with out the battery fitted. The battery also serves as a smoothing circuit which helps if you are say using a 12v tv or other sensitive 12v equipment
the fridge only works on 12v when connected to the car, which supplies the fridge & battery charging when the engine is actualy running
